Wenonah Jean Bachelder King, affectionately known to family and friends as "Jean", passed away peacefully at Mesilla Valley Hospice in Las Cruces, in the early morning hours of April 28, 2014. Jean was born on July 17, 1928, in Morenci, Michigan to Launie and Gertrude Bachelder. She was raised in Morenci, and was a cheerleader at Morenci High School, where she graduated with the Class of 1946. A halfback on the Morenci High football team, Ivan King, Sr. came home from the Navy and asked Jean to marry him. They wed on February 28, 1947, and were a devoted couple until Ivan's death in 2011. Jean and Ivan raised three children and shared many adventures throughout their lives. In addition to being a homemaker and mother, Jean worked for several years at Porter Lumber Company. Jean went into business with her husband in Michigan, Indiana, and Ohio, where they owned two truck stops, a restaurant, a liquor store, and an insurance agency. In the late 1970s, the family moved to Las Cruces, New Mexico, where Jean and Ivan owned and operated the 70/80 Truck Stop on Picacho Avenue. Jean was preceded in death by her husband, Ivan King, Sr., her daughter, Sharon Smith, and her granddaughter, Sarah "Annie" King-Johnson. She is survived by her son, Ivan King Jr. and wife, Margee; her daughter, Jamie King-Manning and husband, John; grandchildren, Stephanie Vargas and husband, Xavier and their son, Gabriel; Matthew Johnson, Ivory Barker and husband, Brandon and their children Hayley and Beau; Christopher Smith, Geoffrey Smith, Angela Ivey, Patrick King, and Kevin Austin, and several great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. She is also survived by close family members Thomas Smith and family, and Hugh and Marnie Dilworth of Clayton, Michigan. Calling hours will be held from 1:00-2:00 pm on Tuesday, May 6, 2014, in the Peace Chapel of Baca's Funeral Chapels, 300 E. Boutz Road. This will be followed by a Memorial Service, with Pastor Felix Gonzales officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family wishes that any donations be made to Mesilla Valley Hospice. We offer a special thank you to the kind and compassionate caregivers of Mesilla Valley Hospice.
