Mike Quigley, 78, of Las Cruces, New Mexico, formerly of St. Louis, Missouri and and Denver, Colorado, entered eternal life on Wednesday, May 28, 2014 at La Posada – Mesilla Valley Hospice. A spark of light and delight has left our presence. Cancer gradually stole Mike's life, but not his love, grace, courage, wit and humor. Mike was born on Jan. 19, 1936, to Mame and Tom Quigley of St. Louis. He was ordained a priest for the Diocese of St. Louis on April 7, 1961. Mike served in several parishes before being sent as a missionary to La Paz, Bolivia, where he served six years. He often said, "Those were the best years of my priesthood." Upon return to the states he served in a Spanish-speaking mission parish in Denver, and while in Denver he met the love of his life, Mo. They were married at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Denver on April 5, 1975. Mike continued throughout his life to serve the most vulnerable in the field of aging by being their voice and advocate. He served through the Salvation Army and DRCOC in Denver and the Office on Aging in Las Cruces. Mike leaves behind his dear wife, Mo, whom he told everyday, "I Love You"; his son, T.J., daughter-in-law, Sarah, and the one who made him smile, Brody, his grandson. Also mourning the loss are his sister, Flo Ruffin of St. Louis, whom he talked with daily; his brothers-in-law, Joe Monahan (Nan), Tim Monahan (Michelle), John Monahan (Lori); sister-in-law, Erin Jeffries (Reggie) as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and very, very close friends. Cremation has taken place and a Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at Holy Cross Catholic Church, 1327 N. Miranda, on today, June 4, 2014 at 10 a.m., with a reception to take place a half hour prior to the liturgical service with the Rev. Don Adamski officiating. Inurnment of cremains will follow at the St. Francis Columbarium. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Mesilla Valley Hospice, 299 E. Montana Ave., Las Cruces, NM 88005 or Casa De Peregrinos, 999 W. Amador Ave., Las Cruces, NM 88005. The family would like to express much gratitude to the staff of Mesilla Valley Hospice, who were truly a gift during Mike's final days; Memorial Medical Cancer Center and Memorial Medical Home Health for their uplifting and encouraging words and actions. They healed Mike's spirit. Also to Drs. Mercer and Adler who worked tirelessly to make Mike's quality of life the best is could be for so long.
