Joe Gummeringer Obituary
Joe Gummeringer was born October 24, 1917 in Orrin, ND to Frank and Agatha (Miller) Gummeringer. He was raised on a farm near Esmond, ND where he attended school and worked on the family farm. Joe joined the National Guard 164 Infantry Americal Division, Co. E, 34th Division on October 28, 1940 and did his basic training at Camp Clayborn, LA. He served in the Phillipines, Guadalcanal and Bougainville Island. Joe drove jeeps for officers on Guadalcanal and was filmed for the "Guadalcanal Diary". Joe received an honorable discharge on August 7, 1943 with the rank of PFC. He received the Good Conduct Medal, Combat Infantry Badge and the Asiatic Pacific Theatre Ribbon. Joe drove big rigs professionally for 37 years for Holroid Company, Inc. of Tacoma, WA without an accident or ticket and was a member of the Teamsters Union. After he retired he traveled extensively and resided in Las Cruces where he was a member and volunteer of the Disabled American Veterans for 20 years driving disabled veterans to medical appointments. He was an avid walker and on his walks he would collect aluminum cans and donated the proceeds to the DAV and other local charities. He also donated 100 pound of turkey every month to the local soup kitchen. For the last 6 years, Joe attended St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in El Paso, TX where he made many good friends both at St. Nicholas and in Las Cruces. Survivors include his devoted friend and caregiver, Georgia Christiansen of Las Cruces, NM; nieces and nephews, Mary Schmitgal, Bill Wolf, Ella Schlabs, Gerald Erck, Noel Drummond, Rochelle McMaster, Sharon Stevens and David Haugen and a sister-in-law, Evie Gummeringer. Joe was preceded in death by his parents; his first and second wife, Hazel and Dollie; his brothers, Jack, Martin, Leo and Henry; his sisters, Rose Wolf, Christiana Erck, Rosina, Magdalena and Elizabeth Gummeringer, Regina Olson, Kate Drummond, Clara Haugen, and Helen Naverson; niece, Bernice Wolf who was raised by Joe's parents from the age of 9 months. Joe was the last surviving member of his family. Mr. Gummeringer will be reposing Sunday, June 15, 2014 from 4 PM to 7 PM in Baca's Chapel of Prayer, 300 E. Boutz Road where the Funeral Service will be celebrated Monday, June 16, 2014 at 10 AM with Reverend Donald Adamski officiating. The Rite of Committal and Interment will follow in Hillcrest Memorial Gardens Cemetery, 5140 W. Picacho Avenue with military honors accorded by a NM National Guard Honor Guard and the Marine Corps League – El Perro Diablo. Serving as casket bearers will be Dean Perkins, Kevin Dasing, Steven Foldy, Sam Bothern, Robert Cano and Jose Lopez. In lieu of flowers, family has requested that donation be made to Mesilla Valley Hospice, 299 E. Montana Avenue, Las Cruces, NM 88005 or St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, 124 S.
