William "Billy" Ray Wellborn went to be with his lord, Jesus Christ, on Sunday, June 8, 2014, at the age of 55, in Las Cruces, New Mexico. William was born Jan. 13, 1959, to his parents, the late Roy Wellborn Jr. and Ellen Wellborn in Las Cruces. He lived most of his life in Las Cruces. William attended Hermosa Heights, Lynn Junior High (Lynn Middle) School, and graduated from Las Cruces High School in 1977. He attended DACC, getting an associate degree in water/wastewater management in 1992. He was a soccer referee with the Las Cruces Soccer Referee Association. He also rang bells for the Salvation Army for many years and attended meetings for hearing-impaired people. He enjoyed dancing on Friday nights. He married Elizabeth Houghton-Wellborn on Feb. 26, 1988, they were married for 26 years. In December 1988, he received a hearing implant for his hearing. He worked for the city of Clovis and Columbus as a water/wastewater operator. William is survived by his son, Jody Ray Wellborn, of Las Cruces, brother Roy Dale Wellborn of Columbus, Georgia, sister Susie (husband Mike) of Florida, Monty Louis Wellborn of Las Cruces, sister Laura May (companion Stephanie) of Ocala, Florida, and brother Robert G. (wife Mindy) of Ocala. He is also survived by Uncle Monty and Aunt Helen Woody of Santa Fe. William is all survived by nieces Tawsha Wellborn, and Kira Wellborn, nephews Roy Dale Wellborn Jr., Matthew Wellborn and Joshua Wellborn. He is also survived by many cousins, and Janice Crump who was William's caregiver for many years. Services scheduled for William are as follows: There will be a visitation from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday June 17, 2014, at the La Paz-Grahams Funeral Home Chapel; a graveside service will be held at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens on Wednesday June 18, 2014, at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Chipper Moore and the Rev. Sid Gantz conducting the services. Serving as honorary pallbearers are Mark Moore, Austin Powers, Martin, Bill Martin and James Lopez. Family has asked instead of flowers, to please make a memorial donation to the Kevin Riedel scholarship for youth soccer referees who would like to continue their education.
