Esther Alvarez, passed away peacefully in her sleep in the early morning hours of Wednesday, July 2, 2014. She was 83 years old. Esther was born on August 16, 1930 in La Mesa, New Mexico, but, she was nearly a life-long resident of Las Cruces. In 1948, she graduated from Gadsden High School and soon after met and married the love her life, Gilbert Alvarez. Their loving and affectionate relationship was an inspiration to all. She began her career as a Secretary at Booker T. Washington Elementary School. Later, she worked at Conlee Elementary School until her retirement in 1990. She was a committed administrator and treated generations of children and faculty with dignity and respect. She was defined by her love of family and her deep and abiding faith in God. Esther was blessed with three beautiful and successful children Edward Alvarez of Albuquerque, N.M., Emma McMillan of Williamsburg, Va., and Gilbert V. "Sonny" Alvarez. Esther will be fondly remembered and deeply missed by everyone she knew for her strong will, effervescent personality, constant determination, and incredible sense of caring and generosity to family, friends, and even strangers. She was always admired for her sense of style and in particular her beautiful hair. The church was her rock and she was a devout member of Holy Cross Roman Catholic Church. During her retirement, she spent many years as a dedicated volunteer of the St. Vincent de Paul Society providing hope and assistance to the poor of the community. She welcomed the birth of her four grandchildren, David Alvarez of Olive Branch, Miss., Stacy Huffman of McKinney, Texas, Matthew McMillan of Washington DC, and Christina McMillan of Tucson, Ariz. with love and joy. In her later years, she also welcomed four beautiful great-grandchildren, Lindsey & Austin Alvarez of Olive Branch and Corley & Brandt Huffman of McKinney. She was preceded in death by her beloved son Gilbert and her brothers Angel "Kelly" Chavez and Everardo "Lalo" Chavez. A visitation will be held at Holy Cross Roman Catholic Church from 6-7pm followed by a rosary service from 7-8pm on Monday July 7, 2014. The memorial mass will take place the next morning, Tuesday July 8, 2014, at 10am at Holy Cross with Monsignor John Anderson presiding. A reception will follow in the church's gathering space.
