Mary Sampson Obituary
Mary Estella Sampson, 91, of Las Cruces, formerly of Arrey, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on July 15, 2014, at Good Samaritan Nursing Facility surrounded by her loved ones. Mary was born in Fort Collins, Colorado, in 1923. She married Marvin Hutson in 1941 and they had one son, Albert. Shortly after Albert was born, Marvin disappeared, leaving Mary to raise her son with the help of her mother. Her mother could not take the cold Colorado winters, so they became snow birds, traveling to Hot Springs in the winters. It was during one of their trips to New Mexico that she met the Sampson family. Oliver began courting Mary and it didn't take long before they said their 'I do's' and began their marriage, which lasted almost 50 years. Together, they raised three daughters and adopted two sons. Mary was a city girl but quickly became a farm girl. She helped Oliver on the farm selling milk, making butter, and sewing clothes for her girls. After they had to sell the family farm, Mary was employed for several years as a cook at the First Baptist Child Care Center in Truth or Consequences. When Oliver accepted a call on his life to become a minister, Mary was right by his side, playing the piano for their little church in Arrey. She was a great example of selflessness when it came to giving. Mary loved God and at the end of her life she so looked forward to going to meet him in Heaven. Mary is survived by her children, Albert Hutson (Karen) of Couer d'Alene, Idaho, Kelene Erickson (Roy) of Alamogordo, Dora Hobbs (Wally) of Morenci, Arizona, Guy Sampson (Daphne) of Seneca, Missouri, and Lura Baxter (Cliff) of Las Cruces. Stepchildren Jimmy Sampson (Geri) of Columbia, South Carolina, Wanda Fike, and Pauline Hodges (Stanley) of Phoenix. She was the proud grandmother to 17 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren, and four great-great grandchildren. Mary is also survived by one brother, Henry Valentine of Halton City, Texas, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Oliver, her son, Lewis, and grandson Carl. There will be a visitation at Getz Funeral Home 1410 E. Bowman, in Las Cruces on Friday, July 25, from 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held at the First Church of the Nazarene, 1900 Locust, Las Cruces, on Saturday, July 26, at 10 a.m. with the burial to follow at the Arrey Community Cemetery.
