James Edward Gleason, 78, of Las Cruces, entered eternal life Saturday, July 26, 2014, at the Advanced Care Hospital of Southern New Mexico with his loving family at his side. James was born Nov. 26, 1935, in Boston, Massachusetts, to Bernard F. Sr. and Margaret E. Sullivan Gleason. After graduating high school in July 1958, James joined the U.S. Army, where he was a field artillery officer, and operations and force development officer, retiring after 28 years of service in August 1985. James was decorated with many medals, badges and ribbons throughout his military career. In 1981, together with his wife, they relocated to Las Cruces and became members of Holy Cross Catholic Church. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 9527. Those left to mourn his passing include his loving wife of 49 years, Janet Mueller Gleason, of the family home; one son, Christopher Gleason and wife, Mary, of Huntley, Illinois; a daughter, Kathleen Gleason of Colorado Springs, Colorado; a brother, Bernard Gleason; as well as three grandchildren, Ryann J. Gleason, Kinzie L.A. Wilson-Gleason and Abigail M. Gleason. James was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Joe Gleason, and a sister, Margaret J. Sullivan. Visitation for Mr. Gleason will begin at 6 p.m. Thursday, July 31, 2014, in Holy Cross Catholic Church, 1327 N. Miranda, where the prayer vigil is scheduled for 7 p.m. At his request, cremation will follow and a memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 2, 2014, in the same church with Msgr. John E. Anderson, retired Bishop Ricardo Ramirez, and the Rev. Ray Flores. Inurnment of cremains will follow in St. Francis Garden Columbarium. Full military honors will accorded by a Fort Bliss Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers, the Gleason Family is requesting that donations be made in his name to Holy Cross Catholic Church, Donate for Life, or the following organizations Mr. Gleason worked for, Kairos of New Mexico or Crossing Prison Ministries.
