Vicenta U. Gomez, affectionately known as "Bessie", was born October 27, 1915 to Telesforo and Teresa Gomez. Bessie passed away August 4, 2014 at the age of 98 in Los Lunas, NM. She was born and raised in Santa Rita, NM and resided there until she decided to join the Army to serve her country in WWII.
She became a radiologist in the Army and continued in that profession after her discharge from the Army in 1946. She was a lovely, gentle lady who was loved and will be dearly missed.
Bessie was preceded in death by her mother, Teresa who passed away when Bessie was a very young child, then her father Telesforo Gomez and wife "Pepa", her sister Mary Lee Schaefer and husband Wendell, her sister, Rose Claveron and brothers Ignacio and his wife Mariana, Ruben and his wife Evangelina and Eduardo.
She is survived by one brother Afredo Gomez (Anita) of Los Lunas, NM, nephew George Gomez also of Los Lunas, Angel Gomez (Arlene) of Mora, NM, nieces Nina Viramontes (Raul) of Deming, NM, Lily Martinez of Lake Forest, CA, Dolores Gilchrist (Gil) of Lodi, CA, Linda Young of Escondido, CA and numerous other nephews and nieces.
Calling hours for Bessie will begin at 9 AM Monday August 11, 2014 at St. Genevieve's Catholic Church, 100 S. Espina, with a Prayer Vigil scheduled for 10 AM and the Funeral Mass to follow immediately thereafter with the Reverend Martin Cordero officiating . The Rite of Committal and Interment will follow in Hillcrest Memorial Gardens Cemetery, 5140 W. Picacho where she will be laid to rest. Military honors will be provided by New Mexico Army National Guard Honor Guard, The Marine Corps League El Perro Diablo Detachment and United Military Women of the Southwest.
Serving as casket bearers will be Alfredo Gomez, Angel Gomez, Raul Viramontes, George Gomez, Robert Gomez and Miguel Gomez.
