Rafaela "Fela" Ruiz, 80, passed away peacefully Aug. 9, 2014, at her home in Las Cruces, New Mexico, surrounded by her loving family. Fela, as she was fondly known to family and friends, was born Jan. 17, 1934, to Zacharias and Fabian Hernandez in Casas Grandes, Chihuahua, Mexico. She devoted herself to help her family in every way she could. Fela married Manuel Ruiz Sr. on Sept. 12, 1956 in El Paso, Texas. Together they had seven children, her greatest achievements, especially her gifted son Ricardo.

She is survived by her four sons of Las Cruces, Joe, Ricardo, Danny and Manny Ruiz Jr. and wife, Patty; and three daughters, Chole Ruiz, Faby and husband, Larry Raught, and Pat Vega; her grandchildren, Megan, Amanda, Alex and Monica Ruiz, Chayna Holguin, Ashley Tirre, Hannahlee Hermosillo and husband, Gabe, Abigale Gonzalez, Summer Lucero, Orlando Melon and Angel Ruiz, Fabrina, Sabrina, Christina Raught, Manuel III Ruiz, Patrick Jr. Vega and Julian D. Vega. She is also survived by 16 loving great-grandchildren and stepchildren Raymond, and John Ruiz and wife, Cindy, Rose Randolph, Margaret Najera and husband, Ernest, Bernie Garcia and husband, Richard. Fela was also blessed with 32 step-grandchildren, 23 step-great-grandchildren and 10 step-great great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Petrita Hernandez from El Paso, Texas.

Fela is preceded in death by her parents and husband, Manuel Ruiz Sr.; and three brothers, Antonio, Manuel and Margarito Hernandez. Also preceding her in death is her grandson, Daniel Manuel Ruiz, great-grandsons preceding her in death are Erik Escamilla, Robert Chavez and Ricardo Pereya; stepson Mauricio "Ficho" Ruiz, step-great-grandsons Joey and Rodney Ruiz, and great grandson Rodney Ruiz.

Pallbearers are Manny Ruiz Jr., Larry Raught, Patrick Vega Jr., Julian D. Vega, Jesse Garcia and Oscar Hernandez. Honorary pallbearers are Harmenio Vigil and Daniel Jake Sambrano. On behalf of the entire family; "A special thank you for our brother Danny for helping us watch over and care for Mom, both day and night."

To Mom: Thank you for the green chile con carne and tortillas you always cooked for us! "MOM YOU WILL BE MISSED DEARLY UNTIL WE MEET AGAIN – WE LOVE YOU MOTHER DEAR."

A funeral service is scheduled to take place at Getz Funeral Home Friday, Aug. 15, 2014, at 1 p.m., with the Rev. Hector Vega officiating. Fela will be laid to rest immediately following at Hillcrest Memorial Garden Cemetery, 5140 W. Picacho, Las Cruces, New Mexico. Arrangements are with Getz Funeral Home, 1410 E.
