Edward Chavez Obituary
Edward A. Chavez (Eddie) died peacefully at home on Dec. 27, 2011. He was born in Las Cruces, New Mexico, on June 24, 1946 to Edward Triviz Chavez and Amelia (Lucretia) Banegas Chavez. He was preceded in death by his parents, son, Joseph Edward Chavez, sister, Sandra Chavez, and brother,Philip Chavez. Eddie was the descendant of Pioneers and Colonizers of the Dona Ana Bend Colony Grant. He attended school at Lucero Elementary, Alameda Jr. High, and Las Cruces High School. He also attended the Detroit Institute of Art. He proudly served in the U.S.Marine Corp and continued to serve in the National Guard as a drill instructor for a few years. He worked with his father as a sign painter and also developed many logos for businesses in Las Cruces. He owned an ad agency, a sign painting business, and later his own building company. His last company was Casa Fina Homes. He was one of the first builders in Las Cruces to build pueblo style homes, a skill he developed from his grandfather and his own research. Eddie was a man of many talents, including painting, cooking, jewelry making, and developing property; doing his own architectural drawings and plans. He owned a restaurant in the 1970's called El Jacal, which was famous for his innovative menus, as he was a master of Mexican cuisine. Many famous people ate in the kitchen, including Pierre Salinger. Eddie was a true "Renaissance man" and will be remembered for his brave and strong spirit and generosity to all. He is survived by his companion of many years, Linda Smiggen, son Vincent Chavez (Lisa Laing), granddaughter, Love Chavez, sister Beverly Chavez Floyd (Greg), sister Gloria Chavez Medica (Philip), sister Norma Chavez Mays (Art), Nephews John C. Floyd, James C. Floyd, Philip Chavez Jr., Chris Chavez, Philip Medica Jr.; Nieces, Anna Marie Higgins, Debra Donadio, Tina Medica Stibor, Uncle Billy Chilton, Aunt and Godmother, Ella Curry, special friend, Eileen Trott, children of the heart, Scott and Christine Smiggen, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Services for Eddie will be Monday, January 2nd, 2012, 3 p.m. at Peace Lutheran Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Jardin de Los Ninos.
