Byron Lloyd Smith, age 70, passed away on April 24, 2012 at home surrounded by his family after a long and valiant struggle with cancer. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Bright Funeral Home. Byron was born September 11, 1941 in Silver City, New Mexico to Lloyd and Esther Smith. He was the middle child and grew up with his two sisters Judy and Enid and graduated from Western High School in 1960. Byron served the public for six years with the Silver City Police Department. In 1970 Byron married Latrelle Kinard and on March 28th they celebrated 42 years of love and family memories. He spent 19 years working with Brown and Root and the family lived in many different states but he always considered Silver City his home. In 1987 they returned to Silver City and Byron went to work for Phelps Dodge at the Chino Mine. Byron was an avid hunter and shooter and silversmith he spent much of his time sharing his hobbies with family and friends. He was a beloved husband, father and friend and he will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. We will cherish the memories we have of Byron and are comforted in knowing his legacy will live on in his children and grandchildren. Byron was preceded in death by his parents Lloyd and Esther Smith and his sister Judy Rockwell. He is survived by his wife, Latrelle Smith and their three children and five grandchildren. His son Scott Smith and his wife Tamara and their sons Justin and Tyler of Huffman, Texas, his son Steve and his wife Alicia Smith and their children Payton, Logan, Laramie and Colton of Soda Springs, Idaho and his daughter, Kelli Smith of Belton, Texas and his younger sister Enid Lang and her husband John of Springerville, Arizona. The family will hold a Celebration of Life at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Gila Regional Medical Center, Attn.
