Barbara Christine Sletten, 38, of Las Cruces, NM lost her long battle against cancer, entering eternal life on Tuesday, May 1st, 2012 surrounded by her loving family. She and her twin brother were born on January 12th, 1974in Phoenix, AZto John W. and Mary J. Sletten.Her life started as it ended with a struggle against death. Born six weeks early at just barely four pounds, she spent her first month of life in the hospital gathering strength to go home.A service of celebration of her life will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church, 2900 Elks Rd in Las Cruces, NM on Sunday, May 6th at 2:00pm. Barbara came to Las Cruces, NM in 1987 with her family when her father started a new job at WSMR. Through her school years, she was very active in Girl Scouts. She started as a Brownie and achievedthe rank of Gold Award, which is only achieved by 5% of Girl Scouts. During her scouting career, she was a role model for other Girl Scouts in her role as camp counselor and other activities. A 1992 graduate of Mayfield High School, Barbara played in the MHS Marching Band. A 2008 graduate from Dona Ana Community College, she continued her studies and had completed most requirements for the Health Information Technology degree. She worked for Frontier Airlines for several years and was a claims processor for Allstate Insurance at the time of her death. An avid cat lover and Dr. Who fan, Barbara also loved to read. She enjoyed spending time working in the garden with her mother and younger sister. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church; the support of the congregation was a source of comfort and strength during her illness. Barbara is survived by her parents John and Mary Sletten , her twin brother Eric Sletten, his wife Teresa, Jessica Sletten (niece), sister Rebecca Sletten (all of Las Cruces), her younger brother Marcus Sletten of TX, and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins located throughout the U.S. She was preceded in death by her loving grandparents, John and Lucille Harmon, her Uncle Rollie Harmon, her Aunt Ruth Harmon, Aunt Ruth Ann Townsend, and her namesake, Aunt Barbara Harmon Stanley. Barbara was a gentle soul and touched the lives of many people. Her bright smile andloving heart will be missed by all her knew her. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Barbara Sletten Memorial Fund at Trinity Lutheran Church, 2900 Elks Rd, Las Cruces, NM 88005.
