Lena Colleen Straight, 75, died after her eight-year battle with bone cancer, peacefully ending Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2013 at La Posada Mesilla Valley Hospice, Las Cruces, N.M. She was born Oct. 29, 1937 in Sedro Woolley, Wash. to Elizabeth and Heber Pitman. She had six siblings, George, Jean, Chauncy, June, Floyd and Richard. She was married to Bernard E. Straight on Feb. 22, 1957 and was happily married for 56 years at her death. A spiritual person she had a great love and connection to all things in nature. She especially loved the hummingbird. Legends say that hummingbirds float free of time, carrying our hopes for love, joy and celebration. Hummingbirds open our eyes to the wonder of the world and inspire us to open our hearts to loved ones and friends. Like a hummingbird, we should always aspire to hover and to savor each moment as it passes, embrace all that life has to offer and to celebrate the joy of everyday. The hummingbird's delicate grace reminds us that life is rich, beauty is everywhere, every personal connection has meaning, and that laughter is life's sweetest creation. Like the hummingbird, she lived each day of her life with her eyes open to the wonder of the world and inspired each of us to do the same. Always surrounded with animals, gardens and people she cared about, she shared her positive attitude, smile, and laughter with every living thing that she touched. She embraced and lived every day with a strength and grace that reminds each of us to live everyday fully and unselfishly. She will truly be missed by those who loved her, but we know that she is in a place where she will be surrounded by a greater love than we can yet conceive of. May she be surrounded by Spirit and live in eternal peace. At Colleen's request, a private memorial service was held in the Chapel of La Posada at Mesilla Valley Hospice, Las Cruces, N.M. on Saturday, Jan. 12 2013. Remembrances may be made to Mesilla Valley Hospice Las Cruces, N.M. She is survived by her husband Bernard of Las Cruces; her daughter Melody and her husband, Michael Stryker of Las Cruces; her son Bernard Straight Jr. and his wife Mardi of Seattle, Wash.; and three grandchildren, Molly, Bernard and Aleah.
