Gary Sherwood, a long-time resident and professional educator in Silver City, who was born in Tucson, Ariz., at Saint Mary's Hospital on Jan. 27, 1943, died on Jan. 26, 2013, one day before his 70th birthday at his home in Northwest Tucson. He leaves behind his wife, Doris; brother, Richard Sherwood (Lois); five grown children, Steven Sherwood (Cathy) of Mesa, Ariz., Wayne Sherwood (Gillian) of Silver City, Keith Sherwood (Patty) of Fairfax, Va.; their mother Carolyn Sherwood of Silver City; sons Brian Sherwood (Evan) of Austin, Texas, and Christopher Sherwood (Kimberly) of La Junta, Colo.; their mother Vickie Sherwood of Albuquerque; two stepchildren, Roger Brown (Trina) of Gilbert, Ariz., and Curtis Brown (Traci) of Tucson; 17 grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. Gary was raised on the outskirts of Tucson, the son of Francis Sherwood, and Jennie Sherwood. He graduated from Tucson's Flowing Wells High School in 1961 and matriculated at Western New Mexico University that same year. At Western he received a bachelor of arts in 1965 and a master of arts in 1970. He spent his professional career in Silver City, where he was an educator for 26 years, and his five children were raised, and made many great friends. Gary taught at several schools in Silver City, including Stout, La Plata, Silver High, and he retired in 1991 as the principal of Sixth Street School. Gary returned to Tucson in 1994 and spent his retirement years giving tours of Tucson and Arizona, traveling with his wife in his RV, spending time with his grandchildren, and constructing and flying model airplanes, which was his favorite hobby.
