It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend, Benjamin "Ben" F. Garcia, 86, of Las Cruces on Sunday, July 28, 2013 at Memorial Medical Center surrounded by his loving family. "Ben," as he was fondly known to family and friends, was born Dec. 22, 1926 in San Miguel to Jose Dario and Modesta Fouillet Garcia. In the early 1940s, Ben worked as a bartender at El Patio and also worked at Melendez Grocery Store in Mesilla delivering groceries to homes. Ben retired from Safeway Stores as a produce manager after 30 years of service. He was a member of the Roman Catholic Church. Those left to mourn his passing include his loving wife of 68 years Estefana "Lale" Rodriguez Garcia of the family home; four beautiful daughters, Teresa Ruiz, Cecelia Sanchez and husband Victor, Elizabeth "Liz" Mauer and husband John and Lucille Benavidez, all of Las Cruces. Other survivors included 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Ben was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Hermina "Minnie" Holguin on July 31, 2010; five brothers, Jose, Felix, Ramon, Ernesto and Pete Garcia; and a sister, Margaret Apodaca. Recitation of the holy rosary will begin at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 1, 2013 in St. Genevieve's Catholic Church, 100 S. Espina St. where the holy mass of resurrection will follow immediately thereafter with Rev. Ricardo Bauza officiating. Inurnment of cremains will take place in St. Genevieve's Columbarium where he will be placed next to his daughter.
