Obituary Condolences

Robert Logan Martin was called home by his maker on Aug. 19, 2013. Bob, as he was fondly known by to his family and friends, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family. Bob, having been under hospice care since November of 2012, was especially fond of and lovingly joked with his nurse Caroline who was of great comfort to the family. Bob was born on Dec. 22, 1932, in Ottumwa, Iowa, to James Martin and Crystal Ford Martin. He graduated from Ottumwa High School in 1950. Bob and his wife Phyllis Fleer Martin were married at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa, by the Rev. Glenn Utterback on Dec. 26, 1952. He is survived by his wife of 60 years Phyllis, his daughter Diana, her husband Victor and grandchildren Gabriel Allen and Alicia Rayjean Chavez. He was preceded in death by his parents and his only son, James Allen Martin who passed away on Feb. 5, 1981. Bob, a proud veteran of the U.S. armed forces, joined the Navy with the all-Iowa Hawkeye unit in January of 1952, and is a Korean War veteran with numerous commendations. He was a naval aviation electronics technician and navigator with more carrier landings than he wished to discuss. After an honorable discharge for the Navy in 1962 at the rank of E-6, he applied with and was immediately hired by the International Business Machine Corporation, (IBM). Bob excelled at IBM as a computer system customer engineer and during his career was a technical expert for on-call system problem diagnosis and onsite support throughout the U.S., especially at the end of his 30 years of employment. Pursuing one of the loves of his life, Bob received his pilot's and instructor's license from the Red Baron Flight School in South Hampton, Penn., in 1955 and later taught the same at White Sands Missile Range, N.M., from 1963 to 1970. This was interspersed with his ham radio operator activities. Bob was a Life Member of the BCPO Elks #1119 and VFW Post #6917. One of the honors he was most proud of was being named as a VFW State and All American Post Quartermaster in 2008-2009 and 2011-2012, respectively. Bob was a past president of the La Mesa, N.M., Lions Club in 1987-89. Bob, with Phyllis at his side, enjoyed going to slot tournaments in Laughlin, Nev., for many years as well as watching NASCAR racing. Their dog Princess held a special place in Bob's heart and she will miss the playtime and snack time routines that they developed over the years. Services with military honors will be held at Hillcrest Cemetery on Aug. 27, 2013, at 10 a.m. supported by La Paz-Graham's Funeral Home. A luncheon will be held at the VFW Post #6917, 5845 Bataan Memorial on the East Mesa after services. The family requests that any donations be made to Ambercare Hospice of Las Cruces or a .
