Sgt. Matthew Stephen Apuan, 27, of Company D, 1st Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Div., Ft. Hood, TX, and of Las Cruces, NM passed away on Sunday, February 18, 2007 in Baghdad, Iraq.
Sgt. Apuan was born in Monterey, California on September 13, 1979 to Charles G. and Sandra Gillit Apuan. He was a 1998 graduate of Mayfield High School and attended New Mexico State University from 1998-2000.
Sgt. Apuan is survived by his father Charles Apuan, his mother Sandra Apuan, sister, Aimee Apuan, step-mother Martha Apuan, and step-sister, Katie Sluyter, all of Las Cruces, NM; his near-sister and near-brother, Kindra & Daniel Moffatt, both of Sacramento, CA; paternal grandparents 1st Sgt. Charles Apuan (USA Ret.) & Elizabeth of Salinas, CA; maternal grandparents, Cleo Gillit, Sr. & Cezilia, of Riverbank, CA; Henry J. Silveira, of Modesto, CA; aunt Wendy Apuan of Salinas, CA; aunts and their husbands, Cheryl & Phyl Dedden, of Alta Loma, CA; Leeanne & Jim Dietz, of North Richland Hills, TX; Michelle & James Moore, of Salinas, CA; cousins, David, Marc, Clair, James, Christopher, Stefanie, Steven; his uncle Cleo Gillit, Jr. & wife Sheri, of Modesto, CA; uncle Brian Gillit, of Grants, NM; other survivors are his many great aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Peggy Silveira and uncle Mark Gillit.
Sgt. Apuan will lie in state from 8:00 a.m.-8:00 p.m., Wednesday, February 28 and Thursday, March 1, 2007 from 8:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. at Graham's Mortuary Chapel, 555 W. Amador, Las Cruces. Rosary services will follow at 7:00 p.m., Thursday at Holy Cross Church, 1327 N. Miranda Street. Funeral Mass will be 10:00 a.m., Friday, March 2, 2007 at Holy Cross Church with burial services to follow at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens Cemetery, 5140 W. Picacho.
