Marlin K. Spangler Sr.

Marlin K. Spangler, Sr. FREDERICKSBURG Marlin K. Spangler, Sr., 70, passed away Monday, July 22, 2013, at the Good Samaritan Hospital. He was the husband of Evelyn E. Wenger Spangler, to whom he was married for 51 years. He was born on September 24, 1942, in Fredericksburg, son of the late Lester E. and Hattie Witters Spangler. As a successful businessman and skilled craftsman, he owned and operated Marlin Spangler & Son for over 40 years, specializing in residential building. He took great pride in being a stickler for detail, and pride in workmanship, providing the best finished product and service to his many customers. He was past president of the Lebanon County Builders Association. He was a member of Zoar's Lutheran Church, Mt. Zion. Marlin was an avid athlete, golfer, and outdoorsman. He was selected to the All-County soccer team in 1959-1960, as well as the All-County baseball team. In 1960 while at Northern Lebanon High School, he was selected as the Outstanding Male Athlete and elected to Northern Lebanon Sports Hall of Fame. He enjoyed playing golf with his closest friends and family at Blue Mountain Golf Course and loved to play in local tournaments and was a fierce competitor, having won the Lebanon County Senior Amateur championship in 1993. He was an active member of the Kittatinny Hunting and Fishing Club and enjoyed time with family and friends at hunting camp. Marlin was a successful manager, coach, and baseball official. During his 27 years as manager of the Fredericksburg Senior Legion baseball team, he shared his love and passion for baseball with family and hundreds of players. His team's record was 468 wins to 191 loses, earning 14 County Legion titles, three Regional titles and one State runner-up finish. After retiring from coaching Legion baseball he coached in the Lebanon City County Baseball League for five years. He enjoyed his summers on the field and was thankful for the privilege of coaching and mentoring the youth of the community. He was a baseball official for 18 years in the PIAA and College. Marlin was inducted into the PA American Legion Baseball Hall of Fame and the PA Central Chapter of the Sports Hall of Fame. He had helped organize the Northern Lebanon Midget Soccer Club. He was active member of the Northern Lebanon community, where he had served as Chairman of the Bethel Township Planning Committee and was a former Bethel Township Supervisor. He was a member and past president of the Fredericksburg Lions Club. In addition to his wife, he is survived by children, Marlin K. Jr., husband of Karen Spangler of Jonestown, Melanie, wife of Robert Monk of Jonestown, Melvin, husband of Dawn Spangler of Hilliard, Ohio, and Michael, husband of Christine Spangler of Fredericksburg; grandchildren, Kaelee, Breann, Camden, Logan, Robert II, Ryan, Heather, Leah, Abbey, Ty, Luke, and Alexandra; sister, Marianne Boltz of Myerstown; and half-sister, Maenna Jamison of Lebanon. He was preceded in death by brother, Lester Spangler, Jr., and half brother, Elwyn Spangler. Family and friends are respectfully invited to attend Marlin's funeral services on Monday, July 29, 2013, at 10 a.m. from Porterfield-Scheid Funeral Directors & Cremation Services, Ltd., 890 Isabel Drive (next to Quentin Circle), Lebanon, with the Rev. Barry S. Kendall officiating. A viewing will be held Sunday evening 6 to 8 p.m. and Monday 9 a.m. to time of service at the funeral home.
