In the 80's, Charlie was the lead singer of Messiah Prophet, a heavy metal Christian rock band. Charlie enjoyed gardening and spending time with his kids. He was active in his church for many years serving as both a deacon and Sunday School teacher.
He is survived by his father; mother; wife; five children; grandson; brother, Steven (Claudia) Clark; sister, Sheila Schauer; sisters-in-law, JoAnn Matyasi, Jennifer (Christopher) Myers, Joyce Hurst (Desra Blamble), Jessica Hurst; brothers-in-law, Andrew Berenyi, James Hurst, Joel Hurst; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his step-father, Dean Zimmerman; his father and mother-in-law, Frank and Margaretta Hurst; brothers-in-law, Frank Hurst Jr., Jeffrey Hurst, John Hurst; and niece, Keri Hurst.
Viewings will be held at NC Church, 20 Kachinka Hollow Road, Berwick, on Wednesday, January 10 from 6 to 8 p.m. and Thursday, January 11 from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. with funeral service immediately following.

I never met Charlie but I loved his voice and passionate lyrics when he sang with Messiah Prophet. SO sorry to learn he had ALS, but I believe he is in heaven where he has or will have a new glorified body. The band's music had an impact on me as a new believer in the late 80's. My condolences to the family.

Jill,
Sorry to hear of Charlie's passing. I know sorrow is for those left behind. Time is the only way of healing this. Just think of all the souls in heaven introducing themselves to Charlie and thanking him for being faithful to a call that resulted in their salvation. Love you so much! We are better for knowing both of you!

I was a classmate of Charlie's at NLHS. My memories of Charlie are from elementary school where he was always up to something. We were in Mrs. Hoff's fifth grade together, and I remember her allowing him to walk around the classroom during class. He had endless energy. He certainly made people laugh. I met him again at a class reunion and was thrilled to see him serving the Lord. I am sorry for those he left behind, but thankful he is now whole and rejoicing in the presence of our God. May God's peace and comfort sustain you during this difficult time.

Whatever you are seeing now is way better than what we are seeing here on Earth! Thank you for the music and hopefully I'll be able to hear you sing again someday.

So sad to hear of his passing. I listened to a lot of Christian music in the 80's and 90's, and Messiah Prophet always stood out as different. I felt such an anointing of the Holy Spirit in all the songs, driven by lyrics that reached deep into issues of personal walk and ministry. One of the few heavy metal bands that I could actually worship to, and still do to this day. Well done good and faithful servant, your ministry will still rock on.
