Daniel L. Backenstose, Jr. LEBANON Daniel L. Backenstose, Jr., 73, passed away surrounded by his loving family on Wednesday April 23, 2014 at Manor Care, Lebanon. He was the husband of Teri R. Traner to whom he would had been married nine years this coming May. Born in Hershey on February 13, 1941, he was the son of the late Dr. Daniel Lee Backenstose Sr. and Elizabeth Dorothy Hyland. Dan earned his Bachelor's Degree from Franklin and Marshall College, followed by a Master's Degree in environmental toxicology from Temple University. After graduate school he worked several years for ALCOA in Pittsburgh as a toxicologist. Later in life he had been self-employed. Known for his Shaker-style furniture, he also created sculptures in wood and metal, restored antiques, and worked on several historic architectural restoration projects. All of the items he had made were for sale at his shop, Springhouse Classics in Buffalo Springs. Dan was passionate about art, music and history, specifically Pennsylvania German history. Dan was a member of the board for Gretna Music, a member of the WITF Advisory Board, and the Suzanne H. Arnold Art Gallery board at LVC. Dan enjoyed his property with its 18th century farmhouse, springhouse and barns. He was always eager to share its history and participated in many house tours for various local organizations. He was active in local politics and supported environmental issues. He was deeply concerned about the quality of life in Lebanon County. Dan was known as a renaissance man and was well known throughout the community. Surviving in addition to his wife is a sister, Mary Elizabeth Backenstose, wife of V.M. Cini of Lebanon; a niece, Felicity Good, a nephew, Christian Good and a grandnephew, Zane Good of Lebanon; a sister, Amy Backenstose of Hershey and a brother, Jonathan Backenstose of Arlington VA; a step daughter, Carey Brown of Minnesota; and two step grandchildren, Eleanor and Wiley Brown. He was predeceased by his son Daniel Lee Backenstose III. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Dan's memory to , 3544 N.
