Durwood C. Hicks MANHEIM Durwood C. "Woody" Hicks, 86, died Saturday, April 20, 2013, at Cedar Haven Nursing Home, Lebanon. He was the husband of Joan Hershberger Hicks, to whom he was married for 64 years. Born September 14, 1926, in Shickshinny, Luzerne Co., he was the son of the late Carl and Verna Slusser Hicks. He was a 1944 graduate of Lebanon High School. Woody was a Navy Veteran of World War II serving on the U.S.S. Iowa in the Pacific Theatre Campaign. He was awarded the Asiatic Pacific Campaign, World War II Victory American Campaign and the 1st and 2nd Battle of the Philippines medals with four stars. He worked at the Bethlehem Steel Co. in Lebanon for eight years. He retired in 1988 from Met-Ed after 34 years of service, where he was founder and Chairman of the Met-Ed Sick Club for 30 years. He was a charter member of the Rural Security Fire Co., where he served 10 years as President, 10 years as Treasurer, and 30+ years with the fire police. He worked part-time for the Hershey Park Police for eight years and was a part-time police officer for N. Lebanon Twp. Woody bowled in three bowling leagues at Cedar Lanes: Lebanon Co. Church League on Kimmerling's Church Team; Silver-Haired Daddies League; and the Retirees League. He was a member of Kimmerling's Church, where he was a past Deacon and was instrumental in the installation of the elevator in the church. Surviving, in addition to his wife, are sons, Ricky Hicks of Lebanon, and Terry Hicks and wife, Diane of Annville; daughters, DeeAnn Remlinger of Lebanon, and Kathy, wife of Dennis "Archie" Buchter of Elizabethtown; 10 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by infant sons, Kerry and Randy; and sister, Virginia Brightbill. Memorial services will be held on Wednesday April 24, 2013, at 7:30 p.m. from the Kreamer Funeral Home & Crematory, 618 E. Main St., Annville. Interment will be the following day at 10 a.m. at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery with full military honors. Procession will form at the funeral home at 9:30 a.m. Thursday morning.
