John F. Phillips PALMYRA John Franklin Phillips, 68, passed away Monday, November 19, 2012 at the M. S. Hershey Medical Center. Born October 19, 1944 in Lebanon, he was a son of the late Ralph P. and Florence (Bomberger) Phillips. John retired as a Chief Warrant Officer Five. He served the Pennsylvania Army National Guard for 38 years as a traditional guardsman and over 30 years as a federal civil service technician. John attended Iona High School and received his GED in 1966 while in the U. S. Army. He participated in undergraduate studies in Business at Mercer County College and in Business Management at Lebanon Valley College. Serving with the 28th Infantry Division from February 1972 until May 1997, when he accepted a position with the newly formed PA ARNG. In April of 2000, he was promoted to Supply Management Officer for the PA ARNG Training Site Command and retired in October 2004. John received many military awards, including the Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal and the Army Achievement Medal. He also received letters of recognition and certificates of appreciation from other army organizations, non-army agencies, local, state and federal government representatives. John was loving, kind and witty and loved to travel with his loving wife Carol. He was an amazing Grandfather, enjoyed riding bike and making forts for his grandchildren. John will be very sadly missed by his family. Surviving are his loving wife, Carol A. (Underkoffler) Phillips; daughter, Barbara A. Cox (companion John Morrow); stepdaughter, Hope Shomper (Tom); stepsons, Kevin Spangler (Deborah) and Todd Freeman; mother-in-law, Audrie Underkoffler; brother, Ken Phillips (Audrey); sisters, Margaret LaFountain (Wayne), Barbara Huie (Dale), Jean Lineaweaver, Nancy Lane (Denzil), Anne Lear (John) and Catherine Lear (Tim); grandchildren, Jon Cox, Cameron Shomper, Amber Shomper, Samantha Scoblink, Kevin Spangler, Jr.; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by brother, Robert Phillips (Carol); sister, Thelma Burkhammer (Larry); father-in-law, Clyde Underkoffler; and step daughter, Jeanette Freeman. A funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday, November 26, 2012 at Buse Funeral Home, 145 N. Grant St., Palmyra, preceded by a viewing from 9 a.m. Interment, with military honors, will be in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville.
