Shirley Darkes Shirley Ann Boyer Darkes, wife of Charles H. Darkes, relinquished her battle with cancer on January 31, 2014. On the occasion of her last birthday, she celebrated 78 years of life. Shirley, the eldest of three children born to Sterling and Emma Emerich Boyer, grew up in the Independent Borough of Lebanon with her younger siblings, Larry Lee Boyer (deceased) and Judith Faye Boyer Lowe of Lebanon. Shirley was a graduate of Lebanon High School, Class of 1953. Shirley's life was devoted to her husband and family. She was a lifelong member of St. Marks U.C.C. and she was active in the life of her church. Shirley retired from Sears and enjoyed, during her retirement years, baking, tending her flower gardens, playing pinochle, bowling and socializing with her childhood friends. Shirley leaves behind her husband, Charles; son Scott, husband of Ann Darkes of Lebanon; son Brian, husband of Anna Darkes of St. Cloud, Fla.; daughter, Dawn Darkes of Lebanon; and son-in-law, Michael Burkey, also of Lebanon. Her heritage includes grandchildren, Brooke Darkes, Caleb Darkes-Burkey, Cameron Darkes-Burkey, Charley Darkes-Burkey and great- granddaughter, Tayleigh Darkes, all of Lebanon. A service of celebration will be held at St. Mark's U.C.C. at 8th and Mifflin Streets on Thursday, February 6 at 2 p.m. Internment at the Gap will take place at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Mark's U.C.C. Please designate "Kitchen Fund".
