Ruth A. Giagnocavo MYERSTOWN Ruth Arlene Giagnocavo (nee Martin), 84, passed away of natural causes on Sunday, April 13, 2014. Formerly of Akron, she lived at Stoneridge Retirement Living, Myerstown, since 2010. Ruth was born to Emanuel and Rachel Martin in Ephrata, on April 16, 1929, and grew up living on family farms in Pennsylvania and Ontario, Canada. She attended Eastern Mennonite College (now University) in Harrisonburg, Va., and Temple University in Philadelphia. She later earned her Associate Teaching Degree from Lebanon Valley College in Annville. Ruth married John Giagnocavo in 1951 and moved to Quakertown, where they later started a detergent and plastics manufacturing company, Martin Manufacturing. She and her husband attended Rocky Ridge Mennonite Church, and Ruth became the first and sole school teacher in the 1952 inaugural year of Rocky Ridge's one-room Quakertown Christian Day School. Ruth particularly loved music, literature, writing, and poetry, was a member of The Writers Guild, and had several of her writings and poems published. From 1972 to 1994, she lived in the Stratford, Ontario area and attended East Zorra Mennonite Church. She was best known during this time for her involvement in running a family bookstore - Cornerstone Books - near Tavistock, Ontario. In 1994 she retired back to Lancaster County. Ruth is survived by seven children, Gregory (m. Anita nee Freriks) of Guatemala, Susan G. Sterrett (m. Peter Spirtes) of Wichita, Kan., and Pittsburgh, Deborah Dudics (m. Robert Dudics) of Pittsburgh, J. Clark Giagnocavo (m. Mindy) of Oklahoma, Cynthia Giagnocavo (m. Antonio Vargas Berenguel) of Almería, Spain, J. Alan Giagnocavo (m. Carole nee Roth) of Manheim, and Patrick Giagnocavo of Denver, Colo. She is also survived by 14 grandchildren, Michael (m. Gabriela), Daniel (m. Janeen), Alan and Rachel Giagnocavo, Dominique Giagnocavo Dudics (m. Lynsie), Aaron Dudics, (m. Christina) and Stephanie Dudics, Alex and Hannah Giagnocavo, Jeff (m. Stephanie), Kristy and Cara Giagnocavo, and Samuel and Lucien Vargas Giagnocavo; and nine great-grandchildren, Natasha (dec.), Isabella, and Sophia Giagnocavo, Michelle and Daniel, Jr. Giagnocavo, Adessa and Leah Dudics, and Aiden and Ethan Giagnocavo. Ruth is also survived by three brothers, Emanuel, Emerson, and Allen; and four sisters, Erma Landis, Alma Landis, Rachael Freed, and Karen Trovinger. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Giagnocavo; her sister, Lavina Redcay; and her two brothers, Elam and Ezra. Funeral arrangements by Grose Funeral Home, Myerstown, with no visitation. A memorial service is planned at Gingrich's Mennonite Church on June 21, 2014.
