Joseph I.C. Everly LEBANON Joseph I.C. Everly, 88, passed away quietly at Hershey Medical Center on March 8, 2014, after a brief illness. He was born on July 31, 1925, in the Brewerytown section of Philadelphia, and attended Roman Catholic High School, graduating as class Salutorian in 1943. While attending Roman, he lettered in both crew and cross-country for the Cahillites. He was part of the eight-oared crew that won the Schoolboy National Rowing Championship for Roman Catholic in 1943, and was later inducted into the school's Sports Hall of Fame. Joe enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1942, prior to completing high school, and completed Basic Training at Parris Island in 1943. He served his country with honor during World War II at Peleliu in 1944 while attached to the 1st Marine Division, and later at Okinawa in 1945 as part of the 1st MP Battalion, Fleet Marine Force. After his honorable discharge from the USMC in 1946, he immediately joined the Pennsylvania State Police. Joe served 35 years with the PSP, retiring a full Captain and Commander of Troop H, Harrisburg in 1980. He was active in numerous veterans' organizations, including the Catholic War Veterans, Marine Corps League and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a longtime organizer and participant in veterans' events in Lebanon, including the annual Memorial Day Parade and Veterans Day ceremonies. He was the Grand Marshal of the 2007 Memorial Day Parade in Lebanon, and considered it one of the greatest honors bestowed upon him during his lifetime. Joe enjoyed time spent working on home improvement projects, spending time with his family, as well as his monthly breakfast meetings with the State Police retirees. He was preceded in death by parents, Wilmer and Anna Everly; brothers, Will and Francis Everly; and his son, Damien Joseph Everly. He is survived by his wife of 64 years (and the love of his life) Lorraine Ditzler Everly of Lebanon; daughter, Rosemary Linkovic of Harrisburg; grandson, Matthew Bowman and his wife Madeleine Bowman of Harrisburg; granddaughter, Michelle Bowman Dixon and husband Michael Dixon of Harrisburg; great- grandchildren, Evan and Patricia Bowman, Joseph and Gabriella Dixon; as well numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Cecilia's Catholic Church, 202 E. Lehman St., Lebanon, PA 17046 at 10 a.m. on Thursday morning. Viewing will be held Thursday morning from 9 to 10 a.m., prior to the service at the church. Interment at Holy Cross Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in the name of Joseph I.C.
