DAY, Arleen Marilyn
Arleen passed away on Tuesday, September 4, 2012 at the age of 63 years after an illness following surgery at the Pasqua Hospital in Regina, SK. Arleen was born in Nokomis General Hospital on March 7, 1949 weighing in at 6 lbs. 10 oz. She was the younger twin to her 7 lbs. 8 oz. brother. They were the only children of Earl and Menitha Fitzsimmons and they enjoyed their childhood in Govan, SK. After finishing high school, Arleen headed for the "big" city where she attended Business College and began her professional career. After marrying on June 12, 1971, Arleen and Dennis set up homemaking in Regina where they raised their two sons, Kent Allan (February 14, 1973) and Mark Darren (May 25, 1975). Arleen worked for the Government of Saskatchewan for her entire professional career. At the tender age of 13 Arleen took to the curling ice. Her career spanned the entire spectrum ranging from social, recreational curling to high-pressure competitive curling, culminating in her 1982 Provincial Championship which ended with a third place finish at the National Scott Tournament of Hearts Women's Championship. After a serious car accident Arleen found a new avenue through which to pursue her passion - the technical aspect of the sport - coaching and officiating. She quickly became a Certified Level 5 Official and over the next 20 years worked at numerous provincial, national and international events, including the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver, BC. Eventually Arleen's curling passion had to move over to make room for the new "lights of her life" - her four precious granddaughters. They filled her heart with love, her eyes with twinkles and her voice with praise.
Mourning Arleen's unexpected passing are her husband Dennis; two sons Kent (Donna) Day and Mark Day; four granddaughters Taylor, Casey-Anne, Julia and Eleanor; mother Menitha; twin brother Allan (Penny) Fitzsimmons; nephews Jay (Stephanie) Fitzsimmons and Lane (Tasha) Fitzsimmons; and niece Paige (Christopher McNaught) Fitzsimmons; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, friends, and a large number of curlers, curling officials, and broadcasters. Arleen was predeceased by her father, Earl Fitzsimmons; and her in-laws, Cliff and Dorothy Day. A SERVICE TO CELEBRATE ARLEEN'S LIFE will be held at Lakeview United Church, 3200 McCallum Avenue, Regina, SK on Saturday, September 8, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Allan Blair Cancer Centre, 4101 Dewdney Avenue, Regina, SK S4T 7T1. To Dennis and family
I was shocked and saddened by Arleen's passing. I shared many good times with Arleen within the curling world both as competing curlers and as volunteers working together in the then provincial ladies curling association (SLCA). She served with dedication and integrity. My thoughts will be with everyone as you all share in the wonderful memories of Arleen and while you celebrate her life. She will be missed.

I was deeply saddened to receive a call from Nancy Kerr and to learn of Arleen's passing. As a friend and former teammate, Arleen and I shared many games, many laughs and many hotel rooms over the years. I'm especially grateful that, as usual, Arleen was behind the scenes at the Continental Cup in Langley this past January. It provided an ideal opportunity for us to catch up on all the curling gossip and rehash a few of our fond memories. Both John and I pass on our deepest sympathy to Dennis and Arleen's family.

We are so sad to loose our friend, Arleen. Our sincere thoughts reach out to Dennis and the Day family.
Memories of Arleen as our leader, teacher and someone who told us we would have fun at any of the events we worked with her. Her memory will last forever. She taught us all to love what we do, and respect what others have to say. She was a great friend to us all. We are truly sorry we will not be able to attend her service.
I know how sad this day wil be but Arleen will want to be remembered with the good time memories, laughs, she made such a difference to us all. Pushing, proding, setting us up and poking us all with a little fun in what we did, with that great smile and humor we will never forget.
On behalf of the World and CCA Curling Umpires our thoughts will be with all of you.

My deepest sympathy to Dennis and his family. Arleen was a tough but fair boss to work for, but you always knew exactly where you stood with Arleen. Anything Arleen decided to do was done with the upmost dedication and was done right! Arleen never did anything in half measures, and was always willing to help the curling assocations at the provincial and national level. The curling world will miss her!
