April 4, 1930 - April 21, 2013
It is with great sadness that Simon Fogel's family is announcing his passing on Sunday, April 21st in Regina. Simon is survived by his immediate family: wife Helen, son Mark (Alexei & grandson, Hudson), daughter Krista (Dan), and daughter Monica (Kayla, Shaela, and great-grandson Weston). Simon was predeceased by his parents (Monsey & Ben Zion), brothers (Moshe, Alter Zindel & Menachem Zvi), and sisters (Sara Lea & Icho). Simon was born in Scel, Romania on April 4, 1930. Upon liberation from WWII German concentration camps, Simon lived in Sweden for 2 years where he made close friends and experienced good food and freedom. Simon immigrated to Canada in 1947 and lived for 5 years in Winnipeg working as a furrier. His hard work was noticed, and he was hired to continue as a furrier in Regina. He then became an orderly at the General Hospital, where he worked for 27 years. Simon was a man of strength, generosity, and unforgettable character. As a Holocaust survivor
, he learned a determination to never give up in life and to always search for the good. To his family, his generosity was boundless and he strived to give them what he couldn't have growing up. Anyone who knew Simon, knew his spark for life, charisma, the twinkle in his eye, and his ability to stand firm in his decisions. Simon also had a gentle side that was demonstrated through his compassion towards others. He especially loved kids, always pinching their noses and cheeks. He will be dearly missed and boldly remembered. In honour of Simon Fogel, a Jewish funeral service will be held on Wednesday, April 24th at 11 a.m. at Beth Jacob Cemetery Chapel (810 Broad Street, Regina), followed by the burial. Light snacks will be served at 12 p.m. at the Speers Family Centre (2333 Cornwall Street, Regina). In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center for Holocaust Studies in memory of Simon. Please visit www.friendsofsimonwiesenthalcenter.com
