Clarence Heth Obituary

Published by Regina Leader-Post on Feb. 15, 2012.
Heth, Clarence Edward July 30, 1920 to February 12, 2012 Clarence passed away peacefully with his family by his side at the Veterans Wing of the Wascana Rehabilitation Centre. He will be remembered and sadly missed by Marie, his wife of 42 years; son, Wayne (Zamira) Heth; daughter, Karen (Quentin) Johnston and granddaughters Megan and Shelby Johnston; son, Vernon (Rene) Heth; step son, Ron (Laurel) Hagel; step daughter, Vivian (Murray) Crumly; step daughter, Cindy (David) McDade. He was predeceased by his parents, John and Christina Heth; first wife, Louise Herman; all his siblings, many relatives and friends. Clarence was born on the family farm in Ravenscrag, Saskatchewan the second youngest of nine children. He was two years old when his mother passed away and ten when his father passed away. Clarence was raised by his older siblings and at the early age of 14, and with $10 in his pocket, he left the family farm and ventured out on his own looking for odd jobs to provide for himself. During WWII, Clarence joined the Regina Rifles (3rd Division) and later the South Saskatchewan Regiment (2nd Division). He travelled overseas to southern England (Kirkford) and lived there for three and a half years while training for battle. He was one of two first class shooters in his regiment. While training, he enlisted twice for active battle however became very ill with the chicken pox the first attempt and with the mumps on the second attempt. After WWII he moved to Regina and worked at the Regina General Hospital for many years in the kitchen and then for 18 years with the Wascana Park Authority where he retired. Shortly before retiring from the Wascana Park Authority at the age of 65, Clarence saved an 85 year old woman from drowning in the Wascana Lake. He was presented with a certificate of commendation from the City of Regina in recognition of his effort and was very proud of this. He enjoyed carpentry and working with nature. At a young age he built a wooden boat and enjoyed fishing from it. He was a very simple non-materialistic person and was always willing to help out his family. We will miss his witty sense of humour which was still intact even as he aged. He was a strong man who endured many hardships in his life and was a true soldier till the very end. A special thanks to the nurses and staff in the Veterans Unit 3-5 for their constant care of Clarence and support of our family. A prayer service will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 16 at Holy Rosary Cathedral. Clarence will be laid to rest in the Field of Honour at Riverside Memorial Park Cemetery on Friday, February 17 at 10:00 a.m. Flowers are most gratefully declined, but those wishing to do so may make a donation to the Wascana Rehabilitation Centre, DVA Ward 3-5.
