Published by Regina Leader-Post from Aug. 6 to Aug. 7, 2015.
DAMENT, Martha Julea
(nee Alfstad)
December 2, 1918 – August 1, 2015
On Saturday, August 1, 2015 Martha Dament passed away peacefully at the age of 96 years with family by her side in the Regina General Hospital. She was predeceased by her husband of 60 years, John; parents Iver and Anna Alfstad; siblings, Ruth Binns, Florence Alfstad, Erna Waterton, Frances Bonneville, Leo Alfstad, June Schulz and David Alfstad; many brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; daughter-in-law Mildred Dament and son-in-law Donald Leier. Left to cherish Martha's memory are her sons, Donald and Dwayne (Marleen) Dament; daughter Judith Leier; nine grandchildren, Timothy (Michelle), Trevor, Terence (Tamara), Trenton (Stacie), Cory and Deanna Dament, Bradley (Yoko) Leier, Jennifer (Scott) Gelowitz, Angela (Casper) Bagamery; eleven great-grandchildren, Carson and Matthew Dament, Hana and Nina Leier, Jessica, Zachary, Rachel and Rebecca Gelowitz, Quintin, Arianna and Liam Bagamery; siblings, Eleanor Grainer, Pearl Howe, Daniel Alfstad, Colleen Johnson-Brezinski and Donnette (Robert) Cojocar; as well as numerous nephews and nieces. Martha was born in McHenry, North Dakota. She was the fourth oldest of 13 siblings. In 1920, the family moved to Saskatchewan in the Ogema district. The Alfstad siblings were very musical. Martha played the piano and violin by ear. She also liked to play baseball. She played third base or shortstop without a glove because they could not afford one. Martha and John married December 20, 1940 and farmed in the Bengough, SK area. In 1946, they moved to Regina, SK. Martha worked for Simpson Sears Catalogue Department, with the Government of Saskatchewan – the Revenue Building (Driver's License and License Plates), Natural Resources and the Treasury Department at the Legislative Building. John and Martha bought the Dament homestead near Bengough while they were both still working at their jobs in Regina, which meant they had to do their farming on weekends and summer holidays. They retired from farming in the late 1990's. Martha enjoyed watching baseball and curling on the television, dancing, gardening, sewing, knitting, baking, preparing large meals as her door was always open to all, and a few stayed and lived with the family for awhile. Martha was very active in the church, Redeemer Lutheran Church, the LWL (Lutheran Women's League) and the Church Choir, she was involved with the Old Time Music Makers, Heritage Fiddlers, the Territorial 49'ers Club and sang in the 49'ers Choir. Martha and John entertained at numerous senior citizens homes throughout the city, at the Wascana Rehabilitation Centre including the Veteran's Wing, Cancer Patient Lodge and Christmas time at Shopper's Drug Mart and Eaton's. She enjoyed the fun family gatherings with relatives and spending time with her grandchildren. In January 2007, Martha moved to Wintergreene Estates until she had to move to the Rawlinson Cres Care Home in May 2015. The family wishes to extend its appreciation to the staff of 5E at Regina General Hospital, Maria Campbell, Wintergreene Estates staff, Pastor Ted Giese and especially the gentleman who gave up his private hospital room to Mom so the family would have the privacy to care and comfort her in the final hours. There are still good people out there. A VISITATION FOR FAMILY AND FRIENDS will be held at Mount Olive Lutheran Church, 2015 4th Avenue, Regina, SK., on Saturday, August 8, 2015 from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. Immediately following the visitation, the Celebration of Martha's Life will be held at Mount Olive Lutheran Church starting at 11:00 a.m., with Pastor Ted Giese officiating.
