The Angels in Heaven Have a New Organist.
Gertrude Annie Barnsley of Abernethy died June 2, 2012, at the age of 96. She was born January 2, 1916, on NW 30-20-10-W2 near Abernethy. Following her schooling in Abernethy Gertie married the love of her life, Arthur Knoke Barnsley, on October 22, 1938. She was especially proud of the fact she had borne children in each of four decades-the '30s, '40s, '50s and '60s. Gertie and Art farmed in the Gillespie district. Art died suddenly on November 20, 1969, leaving Gertie to care for the two younger children. She continued to live on the farm until 1997. She was a life member of the Hon W. R. Motherwell Chapter IODE and the UCW, helped organize the Evergreen Friendship Club, was a church trustee, and completed Art's term on the Balcarres School Board after his death. At the urging of her mother, she received her Grade 8 Piano and Theory from the Toronto Conservatory of Music. Roles as Knox United Church organist, music festival and wedding accompanist and pianist for community events provided her unending pleasure. She continued playing piano into her 90s. Gertie was predeceased by her parents Kenneth and Annie (Slater) Foster; four brothers Andrew, Godfrey (Evelyn), Ken (Winnifred), John in infancy; a sister Marjorie (Bill) Lazenby; and brother in law Herb Guth. She is survived by her four children: Foster (Gayle) and their children Grant (Richelle), Heather Barnsley (Gordon Tracey); Richard (Ann) and their children Carol Barnsley (Adam Erickson), Judith (Melvin) Andres; Florence Barnsley and her children Andrew and John; and Jim (Wendy) and their children Jordan and Sarah; six great- grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; a sister Florence Guth and sisters-in-law Edna Foster and Isabel Barnsley. A Service of Remembrance and Celebration will be held at Knox United Church in Abernethy on Monday June 11, 2012 at 2 p.m. with Rev Brian R. Mee officiating. Donations of remembrance may be made to Knox United Church, Abernethy, S0A0A0 or Balcarres Integrated Care Centre, Balcarres, S0G0C0. Tubman Cremation and Funeral Services in charge of arrangements.
