It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Fred on Wednesday, November 21, 2012 in Regina, SK. He was predeceased by his parents; sisters Dean and Reik; brother-in-law Joe; and niece Els. Fred is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Kay; daughter Monica (Brent); brother Martin (Leni); brother-in-law Gerret; nieces Nina (Paul) and Ria (Jan); nephew Erik (Jolanda) as well as their children and Els' husband Joop. Fred was born and raised in Arnhem, Netherlands where he studied electronics before going to work for the city's telephone company after the Second World War. In 1949, he left his immediate family to immigrate to Canada where he joined an aunt and uncle on their farm north of Carlyle in the Moose Mountain Hills. It wasn't too long though before he left the farm to work for Carlyle Electric. In Carlyle, he met and married Kay and they had their daughter Monica. Fred and Kay lived in Carlyle until 1966 when they left their many good friends to move to Regina where Fred began working for SaskPower as a journeyman electrician on the company's heavy maintenance crew. He was proud that he had a part in building Saskatchewan's southern power grid. Fred always had a joke or story to share with friends. He loved a good debate about politics almost as much as he loved going dancing with Kay who he met at the New Year's Eve dance in Carlyle in 1954. Together Fred and Kay had the travel bug going back to Holland a number of times to visit family, travelling around Canada on summer vacations and in their retirement, taking bus tours or cruising when they weren't revisiting favourite spots closer to home. Fred loved getting together with friends and meeting the "guys" for coffee each morning. Fred's family would like to thank Dr. Buwembo, Dr. Khan and the nursing staff on unit 5A at the General Hospital and unit 4B at the Pasqua Hospital for their care and support after Fred's injury. A MEMORIAL SERVICE will be held at Regina Funeral Home, Hwy #1 East, Regina, SK on Wednesday, November 28, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in Fred's memory may be made to a charity of one's choice. Family and friends are invited to sign the online obituary and tributes page at Arrangements entrusted to
