LEONARD LEGAULT Obituary

Published by Regina Leader-Post on May 7, 2013.

Leonard (Big Guy) Legault
Aug 14, 1932 - May 4, 2013
It is with saddened hearts the family announces the passing of our husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, Len Legault. He was predeceased by his daughter Michelle Newton, parents Leo and Pearl Legault and sister Joanne Sullivan. He will be lovingly remembered and dearly missed by his devoted wife of 55 years, Gloria, daughters Andrea Legault and Lynn (Garry) Hodel, grandchildren, Cole Heglin, Ian Newton and Nadine Heglin, great grandchild Aizlynn Gariepy, brothers Ken (Doris) Legault and Ray (Freddie) Legault, sister Jacki Brick, and numerous nieces, nephews and close friends. Len was born in Kirkland Lake, Ontario and through a football scholarship went on to Kansas State and played College ball while working towards his degree. In 1957 he was picked up by the Saskatchewan Roughriders where he played until 1965. While with the Riders, he began his teaching career at Thom Collegiate where he taught for 29 years. He retired in 1992 and spent his time working on various projects. He loved to spend time at the cottage playing cards and enjoying the company of good friends and family. Although he was known for his toughness in football and school, underneath he was a kind and gentle man. His biggest joy in his life was his family. The family will hold a private graveside service. Flowers graciously declined. Donations in memory of Len may be made to the charity of one's choice. The family extends heartfelt thanks to Dr. Michael Dickson, the caregivers on 3E at the General Hospital and to the wonderful nurses at the Palliative Care ward at the Pasqua hospital for the kindness and exceptional care given to Len.

Gloria, Andy, Lynn and family,

My condolences at the passing of Len, he was a great role model to his students, a tour de force of a father, and always made my mom laugh with his stories. He is in good company with his daughter, and somewhere in the ether they are smiling and laughing big-hearted laughs while watching over the family.

Lots of love,

I didn't like French, mais j'ai aimé Len, so I suffered through the French part of class because my family gave me a head start in French, Mais d'ordinaire pourrait obtenir le sujet de football pour monter. I will not repeat what others have said, "Plus a frappé le clou sur la tête." Don't be sad, etre heureux que vous avez eu le hasard lui permet de touche votre vie.

Mr. Legault was my favourite high school teacher. He earned the respect of all his students by being knowledgeable, likeable and caring. I will never forget him. He was able to teach by telling stories and making it real and interesting for us. He taught from the heart. I am saddened by his passing and wish I could have thanked him in person. I am ever so grateful that I had him as a teacher. May he go on to teach and watch over others now. My sincerest condolences to the family.

I was one of Mr. Legault's students at Thom. He gave me a love of the French language that I have to this day - although my enjoyment created some difficulties for the brothers who followed after me. I know some of my peers thought class was most successful when the Big Guy could be sidetracked into football talk, but I loved Monsieur and Madame Thibault and Paul "qui travaille dans sa chambre". I'm sorry for your loss.

Mr. Legault was one of the favorite teachers at Thom in the late 60's and early 70's for me and my friends. He was always there for us when we needed him. A gentle giant. Missed by all. My thoughts and prayers go out to everyone who knew him.

So sorry to hear about Mr. Legault. He was my french teacher in grade 9 and 10 (1990-1992) at Thom. At first I was petrified of the man--his legend preceded him. But I soon realized that underneath his gruff exterior was a kind and caring educator. He treated students like adults and taught me that effort is more important than skill. He also taught a generation of people to cover their mouths when they yawn! He was one of the best teachers I ever had. Condolences to the Legault family, Len's big toothy grin will live on in my thoughts.

To the family- I am sorry for your loss. he will live on in the memories of many! M Legault took me under his wing in grade 10 when I really needed it. Made me laugh right through grade 12...Because I could speak French we chatted daily" to keep up" He was a fabulous teacher and an amazing gentleman. At my first teacher conference he congratulated me and said" you have to always let them know you like them ,to be a good teacher" he lived those words. Thank you for sharing him!!

I will always remember the "Big Guy" We had a lot of good times together at Thom. The "White knuckle " rides in his truck, Lenny coming into my classroom to turn down the volume on my film projector, so he could teach french next door with out the sound of the second world war aerial battles drowning him out. Again riding in his truck , the cab of it "fogged in" as a result of his cigar. I will always remember his laugh, and his playful teasing. He was a great friend, always willing to help. I am grateful to have been a friend of the "Big Guy ". My condolences to the family.

Len was such a great character-I loved his story-telling and leading discussions of philosophy at the poker table! He was a great role model. I always wanted to be loved and respected by my family as much as he is by all of you. Len had a rich and full life, lived on his own terms. That is all any man can ask. Please accept condolences and best wishes from our family.
