Paul ANTROBUS Obituary

Published by Regina Leader-Post on Aug. 14, 2015.

Paul Antrobus
July 5, 1935 – August 12, 2015
Paul died shortly after his 80th birthday. The birthday party was celebrated in Wascana Park, with 15 family members present. He said it was the best birthday ever. He was born in Camrose, AB, the son of Rev. Fred Antrobus and Margaret Simmons Antrobus. He graduated from high school in Prince Rupert, BC, earned his BA from Brandon College in 1959, BD from McMaster University in 1962 and his PhD in Psychology from the University of Waterloo in 1973. At Brandon College, he met Kay Pue. They married in 1959. Together they spent five years in India as missionaries with the Canadian Baptist Foreign Mission Board, returning to Canada in 1968. He joined the faculty of Luther College, University of Regina in 1973, retiring in 2005. Since then he has taught several courses for the Life Long Learning Centre, right up until June of 2015. Paul and Kay spent an academic year in China teaching English and Paul also taught Psychology. Paul was president of the Saskatchewan Psychological Association and oversaw the negotiations to set up registration. He was president of the Regina Jazz Society, a member of the Regina Ski Club and sang in the Barbershop Chorus. He loved the outdoors, spending summers at the cottage, canoeing, wind surfing and hiking. Spring and fall, Paul and Kay camped around Saskatchewan and in the mountains. In the winter, he downhill and cross country skied. He was also an avid gardener. In 2005, he fell off a ladder, suffering a spinal cord injury which left him a quadriplegic, breathing with a ventilator. The staff of Wascana Rehab became like family, and are to be commended for their care and for enabling him to continue teaching. He was dearly loved by his family and is survived by his wife Kay of 56 years; his children Karen (Richard) of Canmore, AB, Carol (Clark) of Winnipeg, MB and Kevin (Leanne) of Regina; his beloved grandchildren Mason, Corrina, Zoe, Tessa, and Alaia; his sister Lois of Ft Qu'Appelle and brother John (Suzy) of New York; and several nieces and nephews. A Memorial Service will be held in October. Gifts towards a scholarship in Paul's memory may be made to Luther College, University of Regina, 3737 Wascana Parkway, Regina, SK S4S 0A2, noting Antrobus Scholarship.

I was fortunate enough to have Paul serve as my thesis supervisor at U of Regina. I always remember him as a kind human being who gave freely of his time to all who asked. He was able to touch others with his light and now it lives on in all who knew him. I regretted many times not dropping in to see him on my return visits to Regina.

Paul was my thesis supervisor and mentor while at U of Regina. Words are difficult to find to describe the kind soul that he was, always giving freely of himself to anyone who asked. I regret not having dropped in on him on my subsequent visits to Regina over the years. Paul was full of light and he left that with each and everyone whom he touched. Now that light lives on in each of us.

I was fortunate enough to take classes from Paul at the Life Long Learning Center in Regina along with other seniors. Paul was blessedly compassion-ate as he taught his students and an example of patience and acceptance of God's Will. I look on him as one close to Christ.I hope Paul still sees us and pleads for all of us, his students.Dolores Ewen Regina

I was a student of Paul in the 1990s. He had such a profound impact not just on my education, but on how I live my life and how I feel about life and the world. His spirit and openness to all possibilities was uplifting. His teaching is among the most memorable of my academic career. I've thought of him often over the years and will continue to think of him often in years to come. Everyone he touched is lucky to have known him.

Paul was a gifted teacher and an inspiring human being. He was my first psychology teacher when he taught a summer school class at Waterloo Lutheran University (now Wilfred Laurier) in 1969. Later I worked with him here in Saskatchewan as a member of the Saskatchewan Psychological Association. Despite his years, his smile is the same, as is the twinkle in his eyes. He will be missed by many. My thoughts go out to his wife and family.

What an amazing man! What a gift to us all! He was my Psychology Prof 1976-79 at Luther College... and inspired me deeply and opened up so much for me. My only regret is that I didn't write to him a couple of years ago when I saw an article about his work at Wascana Rehab. I wanted to thank him. Blessings to his family.... Leslie Black, Victoria

I took a psychology course from Paul at the Wascana Rehab Centre in 2008. I enjoyed his wit and his quirkiness about teaching. I passed the course and I really liked it! Although I never had the chance, I felt that he would have been an individual that you could talk to for hours. My condolences go out to his family and friends.

Paul was a true inspiration and transformed my life and that of many of my colleagues through his teaching, compassion and leadership and helped us all carry on the incredible work he undertook as a professor and psychologist. His memory and legacy lives on in all of those students who he touched with his insight, wit and care. Paul was a mentor and a great friend. Thank you Paul for sharing your light with so many of us and giving it so freely that we might pass some of it on to others. Your impact on the world is far greater, bolder and amazing that you probably ever knew. My sincere condolences to Kay and Paul's family and friends. We are all going to miss you here in body, but look forward to connecting with you everywhere as your spirit has certainly remained.

Dr. Antrobus was one of my absolute favourite professors. He taught my mom many years ago and she told me to take any class I could from him. I remember him walking in on the first day of class, walking stick in hand, hair and magnificent cloak flowing behind him. He taught me that the way I thought about things was important, he taught me how to relate to my world. He was respectful of every student and just wanted each of us to get to know ourselves and the world better. He was a delight and will be sorely missed. To his family, I'm so sorry for your loss. Take care of your hearts.
