Opal L. Earing, 87, of Vandalia, formerly of the Herscher area, passed away on Thursday, April 5, 2018, at Fayette County Hospital in Vandalia.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday at Unity Baptist Church on Ill. Route 185 North, Vandalia, with the Rev. Robert Weaver officiating. Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home and one hour before services on Monday. Graveside services and interment will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday in Broughton Township Cemetery in Livingston County. Visitation will be held from 1-2 p.m. at Calvert-Martin Funeral Home in Cullom. Memorials: Samaritan's Purse/Operation Christmas Child or Restore Network, supporting foster and adoptive families. Mrs. Earing was born on Dec. 3, 1930, in Cooksville, the daughter of William and Ola Mae Daugherty. She married Melvin Earing on June 10, 1950, in Moorhead, Minn.; he preceded her in death on April 3, 2003.
She was a member of Unity Baptist church and several genealogical/historical societies, including those in Herscher; Breckinridge County, Ky.; Fayette County, Ill.; and Craven County, N.C.
Previously, she was active as a 4-H leader, Ford County Home Extension member and past deaconess at Immanuel Baptist Church in Kankakee. She loved taking writing classes, researching genealogy and writing family stories.
She is survived by her daughters, Marsha Nelson of Greenville, and Diane (Steve) Curll of Vandalia; grandchildren, Michelle (Jeffrey) Sussenbach of Greenville, Megan (Matthew) McPeak of Greenville, Rachel (Joshua) Woods of O'Fallon, Mo., Jeremy (Kelly) Curll of Vandalia, and Randy (Casey) Curll of St. Louis, Mo.; great-grandchildren, William, Wesley, Anna, Isaiah, Noah and Isaac Sussenbach, Caitlan and Andrew McPeak, Jaina and Juliet Woods, and Abilene Curll; great-stepgrandchildren, Austin and Aubrey Hebenstreit; brother, William (Nancy) Daugherty of Wolverton, Minn.; one niece; three nephews; and special cousins, Nelda Daugherty, and David (Lyla) Homan and family.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and a son-in-law, David Nelson.
