Evelyn P. Schmollinger, 82, Vandalia Evelyn P. Schmollinger, 82, of Vandalia, died at 11:35 p.m. on on Friday, Feb. 27, 2015, at Fayette County Hospital in Vandalia. Private family services will be held at a later date. Hohlt and File Funeral Home in Vandalia was in charge of arrangements. Online condolences may be shared at www.hohltandfilefh.com. Mrs. Schmollinger was born on Jan. 19, 1933, in Tamalco Township, Bond County, the daughter of Herschell and Zelma Meyer Belcher. She was preceded in death by her husbands. Survivors include a son, Robert Allgood and his wife Rose of Yorkville; and Janet Allgood of Vandalia.

Slater, Donald E. - Vandalia  
Donald E. Slater, 92, of Ramsey, formerly of Vandalia, passed away at 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 21, 2015, at Fayette County Hospital Long Term Care in Vandalia. Services will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Ramsey, with the Revs. Barry Harmon and Joseph Havrilka officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Ramsey, with military rites accorded by Crawford-Hale American Legion Post 95 of Vandalia. Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. on Wednesday at Hohlt and File Funeral Home in Vandalia. Memorials: St. Joseph Catholic Church or Avenue of Flags. Online condolences may be expressed at www.hohltandfilefh.com. Mr. Slater was born on Feb. 21, 1923, in Vandalia, the son of Edward and Effie Hensley Slater. He married Margaret Holbrook on April 17, 1949, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Ramsey. He was a farmer by career, but was also a skilled painter and carpenter, and was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Ramsey and Crawford-Hale American Legion Post 95 in Vandalia. He is a World War II Navy veteran, serving on the USS Pope (DE-134), one of the five escort vehicles that captured German submarine U-505 in June 1944. He is survived by his wife; son, Dennis Slater and his wife Michelle of Vandalia; daughters, Pat and her husband Gary Schroeder of Decatur, and Cheryle and her husband Mike Meyer of Brownstown; grandchildren, Shayla and her husband Jeff Parker, and Caleb Slater; great-grandson, Brocton Parker; and sister, June Deverick of Vandalia. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Dale, Max and Robert Slater; and sister, Sue Yenny.

Smith, Carol Kay (Grubaugh) - Vandalia  
Carol K. Smith, 70, Vandalia Carol Kay Smith, 70, of Vandalia, passed away at 11:50 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2015, at Aperion Care in St. Elmo. Services were held at 3 p.m. on Saturday at Hohlt and File Funeral Home in Vandalia, with the Rev. Kent "Pee Wee" Denton officiating. After the services, her remains were cremated, per the family's request. Burial will be at a later date. Memorials: Evans Public Library. Online condolences may be shared at www.hohltandfilefh.com. Mrs. Smith was born on Feb. 11, 1945, in Vandalia, the daughter of John "Harry" and Lucile McClary Grubaugh. She married Daniel Smith; he preceded her in death. She was a homemaker, rearing her son and Dan's son, Adam, and in her free time, she loved to read. She is survived by a son, Adam Smith and his wife Amanda of rural Shelby County; grandchildren, Karlee, Brody and Brantly Smith, all of rural Shelby County; special nieces and nephews, Judy and her husband Will Pieper of St. Elmo, Cathy and her husband Kermit Parsons of Danville, Barbara and her husband Mike Hotwick of Decatur; and Gary Evans of Decatur; and many more nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brother, Harold Grubaugh; and sister, Donna Deetz.

Madonna B. Smith, 80, of Belleville, formerly of Ramsey, died on Saturday, Feb. 14, 2015, at Memorial Hospital in Belleville. Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday at Miller Funeral Home in Ramsey, with the Rev. Larry O'Dell officiating. Burial will be in Ramsey Cemetery. Mrs. Smith was born on Jan. 1, 1935, in Carson Township, Fayette County, the daughter of Earl and Doris Buck Carter. She married Amos Lee Smith Jr. on Aug. 8, 1952, in Ramsey. Survivors include a son, Timothy Smith and his wife Vicki of Chester; and a daughter, Amy Smith of Vandalia.

Smith, Ronald Keith - Livingston  
Ronald Keith Smith, 75, of Livingston, Texas, formerly of Vandalia, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 18, 2015, at MD Anderson Hospital in Houston, Texas. Services will be held on Ronald's birthday, March 4, in Texas. His remains were cremated. Mr. Smith was born on March 4, 1939, in Vandalia, the son of Ralph B. and Velma L. Noffsinger Smith. He married Elizabeth Ann Mays on Oct. 2, 1964; and they were divorced on Jan. 31, 1978. They had two children, Ronald Keith Jr. and Ronda Kristine. He married Linda (Bass) McOmber on Sept. 14, 1990, in Kauai, Hawaii. He graduated from Vandalia Community High School in 1957, and he joined the Navy in 1958, serving four years and six months. He graduated from the University of Houston in Texas as an electrical engineer. He worked at HL&P Power Co. in Houston, Texas, in management. He is survived by his wife; son, Ronald K. Smith Jr. of Austin, Texas; daughter, Ronda and her husband Tim Elsenbrook of Houston, Texas; stepson, Woody McOmber and his wife Debbie of Conroe, Texas; grandchildren, Hannah, Rachel and Jacob Elsenbrook; and stepgrandchildren, Emily, Zachary, Natalie and Abbie McOmber. He is also survived by local family members: sisters, Gaye Nell Knolhoff of Centralia, Carolyn L. Kistler of Brownstown and Terri LuAnn Nestrick of Vandalia; many nieces, nephews and cousins; and two aunts in Illinois.

Sussenbach, Richard G. - Crickett Hill Orchard  
Richard G. Sussenbach, 72, of Cricket Hill Orchard, formerly of Greenville, died at 10:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 13, 2015, at his home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at Evangelical United Church of Christ in Highland, with Rev. Chris Hill and Rev. Dr. Ward Sussenbach officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Gilead Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. until time of service on Saturday at the church. Young Funeral Home in Greenville was in charge of arrangements. Memorials: Evangelical United Church of Christ or Mt. Gilead Cemetery. Mr. Sussenbach was born on June 3, 1942, in St. Louis, Mo., the son of Paul S. and Irene Barbara Grob Sussenbach. He married Barbara M. Miller on Aug. 4, 1962, at University City Presbyterian Church. Survivors include his wife; and children, Sandy and her husband Keith Ehrat, and Rick Sussenbach and his wife Janie.
