Charles J. Nickels, 82, of rural Brownstown, passed away at 6:48 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 27, 2013, at his home.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday at Hohlt and File Funeral Home in Vandalia, with the Rev. Wes Bell officiating. Burial will be in Nichols/Nickels Cemetery in rural Brownstown, with military rites accorded by Crawford-Hale American Legion Post 95 of Vandalia. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until time of services on Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials: Crawford-Hale American Legion Post 95 of Vandalia or Four Mile Christian Church. Mr. Nickels was born on May 22, 1931, in Vandalia, the son of Clifford and Mary Strauch Nickels. He married Loretta M. Cole on July 16, 1949, in the parsonage at First Baptist Church in Vandalia.
He worked at Johnson, Stephens and Shinkle Shoe Factory for 11 years, at Allen Plumbing for two years and at John Crane Packing for 21 years. He served in the Army
during the Korean War
. He was a member of Four Mile Christian Church in rural Brownstown, where he was also baptized; Crawford-Hale American Legion Post 95 of Vandalia; and Brownstown VFW
He is survived by his wife; daughter, Sharon and her husband J.R. McDaniel of Indianapolis, Ind.; brothers, Robert Nickels and Gary Nickels, both of St. Elmo; granddaughters, Crystal and her husband Tracey Goodin, and Tina Sprague; and great-grandchildren, Bryten Sprague, Kasten Sprague, Corten Sprague, Je-Cobe Rogers and Elizibeth Goodin.
He was preceded in death by his father; mother; stepmother, Hulda Nickels; and a brother, Kenneth Nickels.
