Dr. Richard F. Whitlock, 93, of Centralia, formerly of Elgin, passed away peacefully on May 14, 2013, at Centralia Manor in Centralia.
Services were held at 11 a.m. on Monday at Irvin Funeral Home in Centralia, with the Rev. Allan Mason officiating. Burial was in Elmwood Cemetery, with military rites accorded by American Legion Post 446 and VFW Post 2055. There was no visitation. Irvin Funeral Home in Centralia was in charge of arrangements. Dr. Whitlock was born on Sept. 14, 1919, in Granite City, the son of the Rev. Omar and Hazel Farmer Whitlock. He married Ann Wolf in 1946; she died in 1961. He married Jean Knights in 1962, and they later divorced. He married the former Virginia (Messex) Maulding.
He graduated from the University of Illinois and the University of Illinois College of Medicine. He practiced obstetrics and gynecology for 45 years, and delivered more than 9,000 babies.
A World War II Army veteran, he served as a battalion and regimental surgeon in Central Europe, and commander of the 610 Separate Clearing Co. He was awarded the Silver Star and three Bronze Stars, and attained the rank of major. He was a member of the 102 Ozark Infantry Division.
He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church of Marco Island, Fla.; Medinah Shrine Club; Elgin Benevolent Protective Order of Elks; and Scottish Rite Lodge of Chicago; and was a past president of the Illinois OB/GYN Society and the OB/GYN Fitzgerald Travel Club.
He is survived by his wife; daughters, Patricia "Trish" Ann of Chicago, Nora Louise of Evanston and Sara Elizabeth of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and nephew, Phillip Jones of New Jersey.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Iola Jones; and son, Richard F. Whitlock.
