Alva Leon Elder, 85, of Vandalia, died at 9:01 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 12, 2012, at his home.
Graveside services will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday at McInturff Cemetery in Hagarstown, with the Rev. Joe Lawson officiating and military rites accorded by Crawford-Hale American Legion Post 95 of Vandalia. Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until time of services on Wednesday at Hohlt and File Funeral Home in Vandalia. Memorials: Second Chance Animal Rescue or VFW Post 3862 of Vandalia. Mr. Elder was born on July 29, 1927, in Mulberry Grove, the son of Henry and Ollie Jackson Elder. He married Reabert M. Diveley on Jan. 31, 1946, in Vandalia.
He was the retired owner and operator of Elder's Fruit and Produce Stand, was a World War II Army veteran and a member of VFW Post 3862 in Vandalia. He was an avid fisherman, and he loved playing cards with his family.
He is survived by his wife; sons, Eugene Elder and his wife Phillis of Vandalia, Danny Elder and his wife Nina of Lemont, Randy Elder and his wife Martha of Mulberry Grove, and Michael Elder and his wife Lisa of Vandalia; daughters, Jeanene and her husband John Lever of Plainfield, and Carmen and special friend Levi Lape of Vandalia; stepson, Harry Ellsworth of Sorento; sisters, Mary Willing and Helen Bone, both of Vandalia; 16 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sons, David and Steve Elder; one brother; and four sisters.
