Barbara Hewitt Behrends, 67, of Brownstown, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 25, 2015, in Vandalia.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday at First United Methodist Church in Vandalia, with the Revs. Terry Westerfield and Joe Lawson officiating. Burial will be in Fairlawn Cemetery in Vandalia. Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until time of services on Thursday at the church. Memorials: Fayette County Health Department Hospice or Shriners Hospitals for Children. Miller Funeral Home in Vandalia is in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Behrends was born on March 31, 1947, in Bloomington, the daughter of Russell E. and Juanita V. McLemore Hewitt. She married Jim Behrends on Feb. 7, 1938, in Vandalia.
She was a registered nurse at Fayette County Hospital on the third floor Med-Surgical Unit and Long Term Care; a former employee of First National Bank, Farmers and Merchants Bank and First Bank, all of Vandalia; and was the former owner of Marie's Restaurant in Vandalia.
She is survived by her husband; daughter, Amy and her husband Bill Houston of Vandalia; son, Mark Helm of St. Elmo; stepdaughters, Natalie Gardener of Nashville, Tenn., and Stephanie Madix of Bloomington; sisters, Janet Smith and Joyce Pennington, both of Vandalia; grandchildren, Cameron, Jake, Vanessa, Destiny, Hannah, Riley and Mackie; and several great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Bill Hewitt; a sister, Dr. Becky Hewitt; and a grandchild, Kayla Houston.
