Bernard will be remembered as a hard worker with feisty character who was a loyal husband, father, grandfather, neighbor and friend.
He was born with an adventurous spirit to John L. and Nova Bolds Goodson on Feb. 3, 1918, in Sefton Township, Fayette County. Bernard was born the first of five children; he had two brothers, Joe and Therman, and two sisters, Mary Lowell & Evelyn Chattham.
Bernard graduated from St. Elmo High School in 1936, and immediately joined the U.S. Navy on June 16, 1936. He shared the privilege of serving our Great Nation until medically discharged on Sept. 5, 1945.
He married Lila C. Buzzard on Aug. 16, 1942, and after the war, they began their adventure as newlyweds by moving west. They were blessed with four children. He moved his family to Belen, N.M. in 1953, and the Goodson family has lived on Jarales Road for the past 62 years.
B.D. was raised as a farmer, but worked in a variety of occupations after his military service to support and care for his growing family. He owned and operated the Jarales Dairy in Belen until 1964, and then worked with the New Mexico Highway Department. All of his children graduated from Belen High School.
Bernard is survived by his four children and their families: daughter Patricia Goodson and her family, Freddy and Trinidad McCullough and Melissa and Alan Cox; Violet Todd and her family, Tracy and Jim Rush, and Tricia and Derek Schiff; Eileen Godsey and her husband Dick, and their grown children, Matthew and Sara Godsey; and his son, John D. Goodson, his wife, Cindy, and their grown children, Jessica and Danny Montano, John Curtis Goodson, and Amy and Freddie Mendoza. B.D. is also survived by four great-grandchildren, Logan Cox, Keegan Cox, Isabel Montano and Isaac Montano; and his beloved caretaker, Carol Rael.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; and a grandchild, Jeanie Todd.
