Constance Sue "Connie" Dugan Lawson, 73, of Leavenworth, Kan., formerly of Vandalia, joined our Lord and Savior on Monday, July 23, 2018, at her home.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday at Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral. Burial will be in Doniphan Cemetery in Doniphan, Kan. Visitation will be held from 1 p.m. until time of services on Friday at the funeral home. Memorials: Ashley Community Faith Church in Ashley, Ill. Online condolences can be expressed at
Connie was born on July 20, 1945, in Linton, Ind. She was the daughter of Clifford Dugan and Billyanna (Poe) Dugan Forbis. She married Lester M. Lawson on Jan. 4, 1967, at First United Methodist Church in Vandalia; he preceded her in death on Jan. 13, 2004.
She graduated from Vandalia Community High School, attended cosmetology school in Effingham and received an associate's degree in youth corrections. She was a correctional officer for 36 years, having worked in McAlester, Okla., at the Lansing Correctional Facility and Atchsion Juvenile Facility.
Connie was a member of Bytington No. 177 Order of Eastern Star and enjoyed writing children's books. She was also a founding member of the Ashley Community of Faith Church in Ashley, Ill.
She is survived by her sons, Lester Lawson of Leavenworth, Kan., and Carl-David Poe Lawson I and his wife Tammy Lynn of Lansing, Kan.; daughter, Yvonne and her husband Bobby Mathis of Leavenworth, Kan.; brothers, Clifford Dugan II and Carylon of Jasper, Ind., and Cevin Dugan and Mary Dugan of Ashley, Ill.; grandchildren, April Yvonne Cecil, Samantha Ann Lawson, Carl-David Poe Lawson II, Jerrit Marion Gould, Aracely Skye Garcia, Benito Jeronimo Garcia, Sara Nichole Bonnett and Bret Aaron Peoples; and seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a grandmother, Leon Tine Densmore; and a daughter, Katrina Lawson Garcia.
