Dennis L. Whitten, 68, of Vandalia, passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2015, at St. Louis, Mo.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Bethel Baptist Church in rural Vandalia, with Dr. Ben Foxworth, the Rev. Joe Lawson and the Rev. Ernest Flowers officiating. Burial will be in Fairlawn Cemetery in Vandalia. Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. on Friday and one hour before services on Saturday, both at the church. Miller Funeral Home in Vandalia was in charge of arrangements. Memorials: Bethel Baptist Church. Online condolences may be expressed at www.millerfh.net.
Mr. Whitten was born on Sept. 23, 1946, in Hillsboro, the son of Alvin Paul and Bonnetta Evelyn Roe Whitten. He married Mary Lou Elam on Aug. 27, 1966, in Vandalia; she passed away on March 6, 2011.
He was a farmer, truck driver, Shafter Township supervisor and former member of the Vandalia Board of Education. He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church, a life member of the Fillmore Masonic Lodge and an inductee of the VCHS Hall of Fame.
He is survived by sons, Michael Whitten, and Chris Whitten and his wife Carrie, both of Vandalia, and Andy Whitten and his wife Kiley of Flora; brother, Clayton Whitten and his wife Bonnie Jean of Vandalia; sister, Eileen Pearson of Vandalia; grandchildren, Drake, Sophie, Ellie, Logan, Lauren, Mallory, Katie and Lucy; and great-grandchildren, Rylan and Landry.
He was preceded in death by his parents and wife.
