Donnell E. "Don" Alcorn, 77, of Eddyville, Ky., formerly of Vandalia and Rock Falls, passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2018, at his home.
Services were held at 2 p.m. on Saturday at Miller Funeral Home in Vandalia, with the Rev. Robert Weaver officiating. Burial with military rites was in McInturff Cemetery in rural Vandalia. Mr. Alcorn was born on March 23, 1941, in St. Louis, Mo., the son of Berlyn Elvis and Erna Maria (Braasch) Alcorn. His mother and children moved to Vandalia. He married Eva Faye Barnett on April 14, 1962, in Vandalia; she passed away on Oct. 31, 2018.
Don served in the Marine Corps, training at Camp Pendleton. He visited places like Okinawa and Hawaii for training. Upon completing his military service, Don obtained a job at Parish-Alford Fence and Machine in Rock Falls. Don and Eva then made their home in Rock Falls. He then transferred to Northwestern Steel and Wire Co. in Sterling and became a crane operator. Don built the family a new home in the Tampico/Walnut area, where the children attended Walnut High School. Don retired from the steel mill in the early 1990s. It was then that they moved to Kentucky and he built a beautiful home on Lake Barkley. Don built or assisted in building other homes in the area. Fishing, boat rides, gardening and taking care of his property is what filled his hours during his retirement.
He is survived by his son, Jeff Alcorn and Tracey of Hopkinsville, Ky.; daughters, Connie Blackburn and Kurt of Rock Falls, and Barbara Robinson of Bloomington; grandchildren, Aric Abell and Amber, Austin Abell, Clayton and Mitchell Robinson, and Payton and Jordan Alcorn; stepgrandchildren, Dustin Mortin, Kali Nave and Sean, Dylan Blackburn, Dustin Wolder, and Rosie Ince and Jason; great-grandchildren, Ethen, Abigail, Cadian, Khloe, Karder, Prezli and Raziel; brothers, Ronnie Alcorn and Vicki of Hayward, Calif., and Dale Alcorn of Reno, Nev.; sister-in-law, Betty Manley and Don of Ramsey.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; sister, Gale Marie (Alcorn) Nuttall; and a grandson, Andrew Len Abell.
