Doris M. Helm, 89, of Vandalia, passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2015, at her daughter's home in Marshall.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at Fairlawn Cemetery in Vandalia, with the Rev. Joe Lawson officiating. Memorials: Sarah Bush Lincoln Lincolnland Hospice, 1000 Health Care Ctr. Mrs. Helm was born on Sept. 29, 1925, in Vandalia, the daughter of Lonnie and Helen (Crandall) Isbell. She married Edward J. Helm on Sept. 7, 1947, in Vandalia; he died on Feb. 27, 2014.
Doris started working for the telephone company as an operator after high school. She then took a job at The Vandalia Leader, and while working there, she met her husband, Edward. When the couple moved to Texas, she worked at The Suburban Journal newspaper. Ed and Doris moved back to Vandalia to retire, and in doing so, she spent a lot of time entertaining at Long Term Care, where she played the piano beautifully. Doris was famous for her pies, she loved cross-stitching and traveling, and she was devoted to her family.
She is survived by her daughter, Jan and her husband Pete Manuel; grandson, Chris Savage and his wife Kim of Covington, Ga.; great-granddaughters, Caroline and Kinley Savage, both of Covington, Ga.; and sisters, Sue and her husband Don Musgrave of St. Charles, Mo., and Donna Cunningham of Kansas City, Mo.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and sibilings, Tom, Darrell, Corky, Jane and Betty.
