Dr. Drennon Durwood Stringer of Fairview, Texas, formerly of Vandalia, passed away on March 24, 2013, after a brief illness.
He was preceeded in death by his parents, Drennon and Julia Stringer of Vandalia.
He is survived by his wife Madalynn; children, Cassandra and husband John Steffen, Elizabeth Dokey, Drennon Jr. and wife Martha, Theresa Lindquist and Mark Stringer; 13 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; sisters, Virginia Mabry of Vandalia, Nell Laswell of San Antonio, Texas; and brothers, Dr. William Stringer of Vandalia and Dr. W.H. Stringer of The Villages, Fla.
Dr. Stringer graduated from Vandalia High School, where he excelled as a star basketball player. He entered the Army for three years, where he was trained as a surgical technician. He also served a stint in Japan during the Korean War. After attending Westminister College in Missouri and the University of Illinois, he received his medical degree at St. Louis University School of Medicine. Since 1978, he practiced medicine in the Dallas, Texas, area where he opened the first known Freestanding Emergency Center, later adding eight other clinics. There are now 6,500 such centers nationwide.
He was president of the National Association of Freestanding Emergency Centers, a member of the Texas Medical Association, Dallas County Medical Society, American Academy of General Practice, American Academy of Ambulatory care, and the Civil Ariation Medical Assoc. He was an active Lions Club member and volunteered medical services at several free clinics.
He will truly be missed by family and friends. A memorial service at the DFW National Cemetery will be held at a later date.
