Earl M. "Cotton" Smith, 81, of Vandalia, passed away at 5:10 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 18, 2013, at Palm Terrace in Mattoon.
Graveside services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday at Evans Cemetery in rural Vandalia, with the Rev. Pete LeDuc officiating. Graveside military rites will be accorded by Crawford-Hale American Legion Post 95 of Vandalia. Hohlt and File Funeral Home in Vandalia was in charge of arrangements. Mr. Smith was born on Aug. 12, 1931, in Seminary Township, the son of Ira and Maude Tedrick Smith. He married Shirley Jones on Nov. 28, 1952; she preceded him in death on March 26, 2007.
He was in the Army, serving during the Korean War. He was a farmer and also worked out of the Salem Carpenters Union. He was a member of Brownstown VFW Post 9770 and Crawford-Hale American Legion Post 95 of Vandalia.
He is survived by daughters, Ruth Ann and her husband Bob Casey of Vandalia, and Coni and her husband Raymond Woolsey of Vandalia; sons, Curtis Smith of Vandalia, and Melvin Smith and his wife Cindy of Vandalia; sisters-in-law, Anita Smith and Betty Stone, both of Vandalia; grandchildren, Kam Hill, Kyle Hill, Mandy Smith Tinker, Tyson Smith, Chase Woolsey, Colton Woolsey, Cody Woolsey and Ashley Berquette; and great-grandchildren, Eli Smith, Emily Mays-Hill, Makayla Tinker and Kaleb Tinker.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; brothers, Clarence Smith, Everett Smith, Ted Davis, O.J. Davis and Raymond Davis; and sisters, Alice Quandt and Mildred Dye.
