Fred D. Schmitt Jr. passed away at 11:48 a.m. on Monday, March 3, 2014, at the Fayette County Hospital emergency room in Vandalia.
Graveside services will be held at noon on Saturday, May 31, at Fairlawn Cemetery in Vandalia, with military rites accorded by Crawford-Hale American Legion Post #95. A memorial service and gathering will be held at the Vandalia VFW immediately following the graveside service.
Fred Jr. was born on Aug. 23, 1941, in Shobonier, the son of Fred Sr. and Marge (Cunningham) Schmitt.
He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1959 and served his country proudly for four years. He married Pauline "Polly" Leifheit on Sept. 4, 1964, in St. Elmo; she preceded him in death on Dec. 29, 1993.
Fred was a retired self-employed carpenter.
He is survived by his daughters Kelly and her husband Pat Mitchell of Carbondale; Cara Dickinson of Union, Mo., and Pam and her husband Jim Clarida of Marion; son, Steve Schmitt and his wife Yvonne of Shobonier; brothers, David Schmitt and his wife Lynn of Vandalia, and Terry Schmitt of Vandalia; sisters, Barbara Atchley of Vandalia, Karen Bolyard of Vandalia, Kathy and her husband Kenny Bogart of Brownstown, Debby Woolsey of Vandalia and Jane Hawk of Vandalia; and grandchildren, Jamie Schmitt of Union, Mo.; Devan Woods and his wife Dawn, stationed at Ft. Riley, Kan.; and Anthony Woods, stationed at Great Lakes.
Fred was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Polly; sister, Linda England; and grandson, Christopher Woods.
