George "Junior" Elam, 84, of Mulberry Grove, passed away at 9:39 p.m. on Tuesday, June 13, 2017, at HSHS Holy Family Hospital in Greenville.
Cremation rites were accorded. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday at First Baptist Church in Mulberry Grove, with the Rev. Benji Potter officiating. Burial will be in Liberty Cemetery in Mulberry Grove, with military rites accorded by American Legion Post No. 1180. Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until time of services on Monday at the church. Memorials: First Baptist Church of Mulberry Grove or the family. Mr. Elam was born on Sept. 2, 1932, in Bear Grove Township, the son of George W. and Edna B. (Kleinik) Elam. He married Neva Ilene Wright on Feb. 24, 1957.
Junior served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was the owner and operator of JR ELAM Feed Hauling for Purina Mills Inc. in Vandalia for nearly 50 years. He enjoyed watching Cardinals baseball and gardening. He was a member of Mulberry Grove American Legion Post No. 1180 and Old Capital Post No. 3862 of Vandalia.
He is survived by his wife; sons, Brent Elam of Mulberry Grove and Kent Elam of Portland, Ind; brother, Ronnie Elam and his wife Millie of Vandalia; sisters, Evelyn Hecht of Chester, and Anna and her husband Russell Keeling of Lowry City, Mo.; grandchildren, Richie Romine, Sylinda Elam, Sharon Elam and Cory Elam; and great-grandchildren, Kaleb Elam and Zoe Romine.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Donnie Elam; and a sister, Doris Elam.
