Gertrude T. Green, 92, of Leawood, Kan., formerly of Shobonier, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 28, 2018, at Overland Park Hospital in Kansas City, Kan.
A funeral Mass will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday at Mother of Dolors Catholic Church in Vandalia. Interment will be in Fairlawn Cemetery in Vandalia. Visitation will be held from 9:45-10:45 a.m. on Saturday at Hohlt and File Funeral Home in Vandalia. Memorials: FAYCO Enterprises Inc. Online condolences can be expressed at www.hohltandfilefh.com.
Mrs. Green was born on April 6, 1925, in Edgemere, N.Y., the daughter of Josephine and John Cavanaugh. She married Guy W. Green on June 10, 1943; he preceded her in death on Oct. 6, 2004.
After their marriage, the Greens left New York and moved to the family farm in Shobonier, where they raised six children.
Gertrude was a member of Mother of Dolors Catholic Church and Catholic Daughters of America. She worked to bring education and aid to the developmentally disabled, both locally and statewide. She helped start the first school for the developmentally disabled in Fayette County. After her children were grown, she worked for FAYCO in the Birth-to-Three Program.
After the passing of her husband, she moved to be closer to family. For the past eight years, she resided at Sunrise of Leawood in Kansas.
She is survived by her sons, George Green and his wife Linda, Guy Green Jr. and his wife Julie, and John Green and his wife Kellie; daughters, Kathy Beijen and her husband Ed, and Mary Bertram and her husband Carroll; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and a son, Richard A. Green.
