Helen D. Edwards, 95, of Vandalia, passed away on Saturday, Dec. 1, 2018, at her home, surrounded by loved ones.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at Miller Funeral Home in Vandalia, with the Rev. Joe Lawson officiating. Burial will be in Fairlawn Cemetery in Vandalia. Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until time of services on Tuesday at the funeral home. Mrs. Edwards was born on May 29, 1923, in Moweaqua, the daughter of Oral and Mirabelle (Walker) Walker. She married Bruce Edwards on Jan. 29, 1951; he passed away on Aug. 17, 1962. She met her beloved companion of 43, years, Lyle Jones, in 1966; he passed away in 2009.
Helen attended Vandalia schools, graduating in 1941, and Brown Business School. Her careers included working for State's Attorney Richard Royal, Executive Secretary for Selective Service for 19 years, and administrative assistant for Fayette County Hospital. Her memberships included: First Baptist Church, 79 years; Soroptimist International of Vandalia, 50-plus years; past member of Vandalia Woman's Club, Beta Sigma Phi Sorority and Habitat for Humanity, and past Fayette County Hospital Auxiliary Pink Lady.
She is survived by her son, Randy Edwards and Janis of Vandalia; daughters, Debbie Opel and Bill of Red Bud, and Pam Mars and Ron of Olathe, Kan.; beloved grandchildren, Jennifer Myerscough and Rick, Traci Liefer, Tim Edwards and Jamie, Amy Edwards and Tyler Mullins, Kyle Reiss and Megan, and Joe Lockart and Alicia; beloved great-grandchildren, Kelsey and Lauren Myerscough, Isabella and Emilee Liefer, Preston, Isabella, Charlotte, Sawyer, Theo Edwards, Marlee Lockart and Kale Reiss; honorary grandchildren, John Mars and Kelcey, Seth Mars and Claralyn, and Jordan Mars; honorary great-grandchildren, Aiden, Alayna, Amelia, Jack, Ollie and Archie Mars; honorary daughters, Lyn Gartke and Jennifer Hester; and caregiver, Tori Bunker and Bill.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; beloved companion; uncle and aunt, Fred and Thelma Mattes; honorary daughter, Chris Mars; and granddaughter, Ashley Reiss.
